1983 chevy c10 with a 1986 6bt cummins 12v first gen
« on: October 15, 2013, 07:09:05 pm »
hey guys,

I have a 1983 chevy c10 long bed. i am doing a cummins 12v first gen swap. I have a rearend out of a 1986 c30 1 ton dually dump truck. i have all new parts like brake shoes and spring kits etc. The problem i am having is the backing plates a rusted through and the dealer has stopped making them. plus i dont have any info on the rearend. Does anyone know where i can find them or have them made or use ones from another year truck.

i don't know anything about this rear---i'm thinking it's a 14 bolt?

That's strange how GM doesn't carry them anymore, but then again maybe it's not surprising considering how GM has been (mis)managed lately.

Maybe call Yukon gear tomorrow:

They should be able to help you.

If it was a cab and chassis truck it is a GM Corporate 14 bolt, if it was a Dually pickup at one time it has a Dana 70.

X2 on what zieg said. If its out a cab & chassis its a 14 bolt. If its out of a dually its will be a Dana 70. You said dump truck, I am assuming it is a 14 bolt out of a cab & chassis. If so the rear end housing is narrower than the pick up housing. If you plan to run single wheels they are going to be way inside the wheel well, possibly even rubbing on the inner fender well.
Any particular reason your swapping an 8 lug rear end into a 5 lug truck?
A 12 bolt should hold up the Cummins if you respect its power.
