Starter grinding after intake install...
« on: November 17, 2013, 12:51:03 pm »
OK, so i installed an intake, carb, and headers  on my 84 350. I get it all back together and crank it... Starter grinds.. I didn't touch the starter at all during the process. After i take the starter off to get it checked out, i put it back on with a 1/16 shim. Crank on it (without touching gas before or during) and it fired right up within about 5 seconds, NO noise from starter. Engine gets warm,  i shut it off, and try to crank again and the starter grinds like i never shimmed it???? Please help do i need to put a new starter on it? I timed it to 8 degrees at idle (warm idle) any suggestions? Flexplate is in tact, no broken teeth or warped and i have a heat shield on the starter to deflect heat from the headers.

Possibly, the starter solenoid is failing and engaging the starter motor before the starter pinion meshes with the ring gear.  At this point it is probably best to replace the starter.

To prevent recurrence, before removing the existing starter, make sure all of your starter wiring is in good shape and connections are tight, including the ground cable connection to the block.  While your at it, verify that all of your engine compartment grounds are present, clean and tight.  If insufficient voltage was reaching the starter, the solenoid internal contacts that energize the starter motor might have burned and distorted, causing premature starter cranking.

FYI - Randomly adding a shim for 'grinding' is the wrong approach.  Proper starter spacing is based on measuring starter pinion to ring gear lash and is generally performed to resolve singing or starter whine while (excessive lash) or immediately following (insufficient lash) cranking.  For symptoms to begin right after replacing the intake is probably coincidental, unless you have poor cable connections to the battery or starter, or a poor ground connection to the block as a result.

will do, thank you for the insight. I re wired everything because the previous owner had this motor installed and never extended the wiring for the starter. Came with an I6 and found wires melted because they were against the back of the head for 6+ years because they were too short..... Thank you for the help!
