LOL - Marketing strategy.

1988 marked the introduction of a 'new light truck body style.'  GM wanted to maintain the tradition of C/K truck marketing, so during the production overlap and transition they renamed the square body C and K models to R and V, respectively.

'R/V' simply supplanted 'C/K' with regard to all GM square body truck models for 1987 forward, including Blazers, Suburbans, pick-ups and the Cab & Chassis trucks, in 1/2-, 3/4- & 1-ton models.  'R' is 2WD, 'V' is 4WD.

I had the same question when I got my 87 R10.

I remember I got all excited that there was a V10 truck!  nope, no V10s, it's just a 4x4...lol

that does make sense, but the VIN for the trucks were still C/K and the blazers and suburbans were R/V for the 5 digit.
