How to hook up fuel gauge to fuel cell
« on: December 20, 2013, 06:13:51 pm »
I installed a 20 gallon jaz fuel cell in my 1986 c10. The truck came factory with dual tanks and the diverter valve. Does anyone know what wire needs to hook to the sending unit? I thought it would be the pink/red wire that was originally hooked to my factory tank. When i hook this wire up my gas gauge reads way past full.  I know i am missing somthing. Thanks john

The pink wire originally connected to the fuel sender is correct with a caveat: The signal wires from the original left and right tank pick-up units are switched by the tank selector valve below the cab.  Did you bypass the selector valve to hardwire the dash gauge directly to the fuel cell sender?  Or, is the gauge wiring still routed through the selector valve?

In addition, the sending unit has to be grounded to the truck frame to complete the gauge/sender circuit.

The wiring is still there just unpluged from the selctor valve. Do you know what wire heads back to fuel gauge? Also the cell is grounded also.

The wire from the dash gauge is pink, but splits at the fuel selector valve into pink/black (right tank) and pink/white (left tank).  Sender ground wires typically are colored (e.g., blue, purple, etc.).  Make sure the gauge is wired to the sender and verify that the sender is actually grounded to the frame rail.  Then, if you still have problems, verify the frame rail is properly grounded to battery negative.  Refer to the 1986 Wiring Manual "AUXILIARY FUEL TANK" schematic on page 16 for details.
