Price for painting a hood?
« on: January 19, 2014, 01:42:22 am »
I'm just curious what others have paid and what I might expect to pay to get just the hood done for my truck.

I'm not interested in a restoration job.  I just want to have a red hood without rust for now.  So, I'm not looking to pay high dollar, but I do want to have this donor hood media blasted and sealed with something that will keep until I'm ready to deal with the whole truck.

So, I'm curious what others have done, paid or would suggest.

Thanks in advance.

it cost me $30 and about 4hrs of work to paint my hood (well free I found the paint in my dad garage ^_^ but ppg sells spray paint for $9.99/can) else if your looking for a pro to do it I would say $200-$400 depending on the shop.

Bodywork is one of those things that can have a VERY big range of price depending on who you get to do it & what materials are bought. Finding the right person for the right money is the catch
Something between $500-$600 would be my guess. $150-$200 to media blast, $100 to prep/fill the couple little dents (yes, it has a few ;)) $150-$200 for the paint spraying, $100-$200 for primer, paint, ect. depending on what is bought.

What you don't want to do is spend the money on media blasting to have some ding-dong do a halfassed job with cheap materials after you spend "good" money making a nice, bare surface to start with & have to deal with getting that stuff back off at a later date when you go to do the whole truck.
My advice is to hang the hood in the garage, gather your other parts needed & $$$ to do it once the right way, with good quality materials when you do the rest of the truck...that way, your not spending the money twice for the same hood.

If the hood you have on there now keeps the water off of the motor & stays closed while your driving...it's a good hood until you are ready to paint the whole truck.
Is it really "better" to have a mis-matched hood (shinier, color match, no flaws) on a worn, flawed truck (plus the money) or a matching hood to the truck with some rust on the edge? I know my answer! Lorne

I would agree with HAULING IT on the price.  CA BIG RED if you are interested in getting it done I have a friend who own's a media blasting company, along with a powder coating company, and a painting/body work company.
If you want you can pm me ( you need to empty your inbox though, I tried to answer your last pm but it said your inbox was full ), you can go by and talk to him and drop my name and see what he says.

Does that include the clear coat ?  I was once quoted from Miracle for a body panel I wanted done, only to find out when I got there it did not include the clear coat.   >:(

$175 is simply not enough money...somewhere something is being shortcut, maybe & likely a combination of: Either in their prep (scuffing & painting right over the shipping primer coat), the paint (using cheap single stage, "factory pack" colors) or the book keeping (the guy in the front office is going to say "Cash Only" which means the owner isn't getting the money...it's going in someone's pocket). There may be other reasons, but a shop this day & age can't last doing a panel as big as a hood for that kind of money. My Two Cents, Lorne

we might would paint  one at our shop if all we had to do is sand the hood and paint IF it WASN'T a tri coat color (black diamond pearl is a tri coat)

we painted a 94 chevy from the pin stripe up (front clip, hood, and cab. nothing on bed) last week for $450 it was regular black base coat and clear coat. we told  the guy up front for that price we were scuffing/sanding and spraying. no fixing dent and no buffing trash out. He ended up with a heck of a deal... turned out pretty slick with maybe 2 peaces of trash.

we  dont media blast or anything at my shop we just strip with sanders (not very many bad rust vehicles in alabama) so im not sure on the price. im gonna say that if you had a decent hood (rust free) with 3-4 small dings we would fix the dings, prime, block, and paint, nib any trash pretty much a NICE job for around $350 thats with GOOD quality materials.

I forgot to mention that fact that HAULIN IT pointed out.  I do use miracle and the such for quick low buck paint jobs in the past for a lot of the cars I have bought and fixed minor things to turn around and make a profit.
But I always have done my own prep work, and masked off the car before if going on trailer or in the parking lot if I drove it and dropped it off.  Let's just say as Lorne said, they do not do the best job in either of these jobs which are kinda important to a good paint job.
Don't get me wrong, you can get a cheap paint job for decent money if you are willing to do those 2 things yourself.  At least that is my experience over the years in Sacramento.
