i just got my first truck a 79 gmc high sierra i got a couple of questions it has a 12in lift with 38.5 tires i was wondering what axle would it have i was told a dana 60 but not sure also what gearing would i need to change it to doing 60 i am reving way to high for my liking got more but i believe the biggest thing now is changing gears out on axles to make more road worthy

well lets start with the bad. its only ½ ton. so if you want to mud you will break stuff but even with ¾ tons break stuff. your front is a dana 44 and a dana 44 and dana 60 look similar but the dana 60 uses Bolts instead of u bolts on the side that bolts closest to the pumpkin. its not a bad truck from what i can see just dont expect to be able to mud with it and not break anything like axle shafts the drives side front is long and is prone to breaking at the u-joint. how much did this truck cost you?

First off welcome to the site csanderlin from California. From what I can see, I agree with engineer about the corporate 10 bolt front. Csanderlin, the person who you got it from said the front axle was a dana 60 ?
Do you have a pic of the rear axle from the back so we can see the pumkin ? I do not know why someone would change the front axle to a dana 60 and leave the rear a corporate 12 bolt (if that is what you have) unless they were trying to turn it into a truck with 1 ton running gear and did not finish.

I agree with Irish, then corporate 10 and DANA 44 look the same except for the little "dog ears" that are on the bottom of either corner near the cover on the case. It looks like his has them, so I believe it is a DANA 44 also.

Yes sorry 10 bolt for some reason I was thinking the 44 had the ears(even though I run the Dana 44). Think it was getting late for me lol.
But still unless you have 2k motor under that hood imo it’s too much, 3.2K isn’t a rip off but in buyers eyes a good deal would have been 2k- 2.5k . Can’t tell from the pictures to see the rockers but I see rust on the frame so it’s not a frame off rebuild and I can be quit crude when it comes to my honest opinion. But I try and think about how much I would pay for something from the junkyard because it’s used just like everyone's truck. I see 100-150 in axles tires/rims only being 6 lug and 12"?wide maybe $400. auto trans I don’t care for them but they do make it easy in the mud but a couple hundred for that and a couple more for the t case. Bed doesn't look too bad cab neither, inside looks fair for the age. Hood is bent and I don’t know why someone would do that to the vent window. Unless they had mirrors mounted there.
again this is my crude opinion

Honestly, $3200.00 for a truck that is lifted that much and as long as it runs good without any major problems, I'd say you got a good deal. But, as Irish said, if you have a bunch of rusted panels and needed a lot of body work to remove said rust, then I would say not so good of a deal.
