86 carb to 98 fuel injection
« on: February 18, 2014, 08:50:09 am »
My motor seized in my 86, found a guy with a 98 he's parting out, it had full drive train and engine wiring.  Can anyonetell me what else iI'll need off 98 to get it working on my 86?

PCM as well, unless you were just planning to swap the long block.  IIRC, 99 model year was when they started putting the LSx engines in the truck and if you plan on swapping all the wiring, etc. I would go with one of the LSx engines instead.  I think you would be alot happier with it.

Can get motor and all wiring for $500, what's the difference in 98 engine and 99? Is that something I can swap into 98 setup later?

Thanks for reply

The differences in a 1998 is a Gen I Smallblock.  It is 'basically' the same block as what was used in 1987.  Some mild changes took place but it is still the same.  The 1999 Truck (not Van) engine is a LS based Gen III engine and is shares no architecture with the Gen I small block.

The positive is it will drop right in.  Gen the engine, wiring, ecm, manifolds, partial exhaust as much as you can from the donor.

Thanks a lot for input. I'll be able to get engine harness with ecm and complete motor with manifolds.
Will the harness from the 98 motor plug into the 86 truck or will I need to make mods or buy new wires and will I need a different fuel pump?

No it won't plug in.  You will need to get all the unnecessary wiring out of the engine harness and they tie into the existing wiring.
You will need a 1987 sending unit and an intank fuel pump.  An EP241 will work if the engine is stock.  You will also need good suppy and return lines along with replacing all the hose with Fuel injection rated hose.

This sending unit what your talking about? TBI
I see these have 3 outlets, is 3rd outlet a vent line that runs to charcoal canister? If so mine is disconnected,  do I need it hooked up

Going to pick the motor this weekend so will be getting into it soon. The guy has a lot of parts off this 98 Chevy 1500, I was wondering if there is anything else I should take off it. Will the core support fit my 86 to get the 98 front clip?

No sheet metal on that truck will fit anything on yours.
