Gas Tanks

Looking at buying gas tanks and wanted some advice:

Is the Spectra Premium 16 gallon tank at $88 a good deal? I have heard this is a good tank. Both of my tanks need to be replaced (drives side is leaking bad due to a seam in the side of the tank where it was stamped). I think I might go with the Spectra, but I was not sure if going with a poly plastic tank was worth it.

I went super cheap and bought the Platinum Pro tanks from RockAuto. Part # FTK010036 and they were $69.79 per tank.
Both my tanks were rusted out, thanks to the truck sitting with fuel since 2001... Anyhow, I haven't installed the tanks yet but they seem pretty solid for the price. however, the metal is a little thinner gauge than my OE tanks, which may scare some people but my truck doesn't go off road so I was ok with it.

Do you also have the tank straps? Is the lock ring included?

I will have to check on the straps, but the locking ring would be part of the sending unit.

While you are in there, replace the filler neck and vent hoses.  They'll be shot by now.  Inspect the hanger brackets carefully: they can rust and fatigue fail at the corner.

For connecting the straps to the hangers, I used sidewalk bolts, sometimes called shutter screws or button-head screws.  They are flat enough to not wear through the tank from underneath.  I put one layer of anti-squeak with a hole for the screw head, then another layer of anti-squeak over that, to make sure they wouldn't contact the tank.  Redoing the rivets was something I didn't have the means to do.

Huh. I was poking around looking at gas tanks (google search for the Spectra brand brought me back here).
Didn't see 'em on the site's catalog, though.
Do you have the 20g tanks? If you have 'em locally I could pick 'em up.

No rush, I still have lots of work to do on this truck.

I have just recently replaced my completely rusted out gas tank with a spectra one that I bought a couple weeks ago. I also bought tank supports which already have the straps riveted to them and ready to mount. The tank I picked up from the local O'Riely's came with the lock ring and rubber gasket. I also ordered a spectra sending unit and replaced that as well.  And everything is well so far.

What about a decent sending unit,Spectra makes crappy ones I went through 3,has anyone found a good sending unit,YES my gauge and wiring are good ,they worked before and never had a problem before,I replaced them to cause I figured it was about time and I had the tank out anyway....anyone know a good company that sells one?

I just replaced the left-side tank (16-gal) this weekend, mine was $112 from the local Napa, Canadian-made. Came with the lock ring and a new O-ring. I had to get new straps ($22-pr) from Napa as well as the we drive in a lot of mud on our farm and the tanks & front strap were rusted out. One improvement I made was drilling out some 1/2" drain holes in the plastic skid-plate that covers the tank(s)... figuring that it might help with drying & draining. I did have to bang the spot-welded flanges downward to fit the L-brackets mounting to the frame rails (no biggie). No info on a sending unit, mine seemed to be fine after parts washing. Good luck.
