Monojet carb parts???
« on: March 11, 2014, 08:18:33 am »
Not sure where this fits, since I can't find a carb sub-forum, so I'm guessing here....
Does anyone know where I can get, or anyone have, parts for a Monojet carburetor? Before you point me to quadrajetparts.com or similar, I need a specific hard to locate part....the lower throttle shaft (I guess it would be called) that runs through the carb and has the throttle plate disc attached with the two screws. This is what the throttle linkage etc all hooks to on the outside. My carb was so carboned up, gummed up, etc that everything was sticky coal black and the two screws for the blade broke right off as soon as I twisted the heads. If that wasn't bad enough, the screws protruded too far out the back and I had to grind them down to get the shaft out. And when I got it out the shaft is worn substantially where it pivots in the carb body. SOOO....I need that shaft or a different carb. OR if there's a way to adapt a different carb, like a 2G I'd like to know.

My guess is that you're into this more than that carburetor is worth.  I would venture to guess that the aluminum body or throttle plate needs drilled and bushings added--I don't think a new shaft will fix the sloppy fit.  Check some junkyards to see if you can find one that is in better shape to rebuild.  Is this for a straight six?  What motor?

I suggest checking eBay.  Maybe get a parts crab for a few $s.  When I disassembled my 1978 monojet I broke off the screws on the throttle blades as well but was able to drill them out enough to remove the shaft with out damage.  I assume you are working on a 6.  Have fun, learn some new stuff and be safe.

Yea it's a 292 6cyl, sorry.

Yea I know I can go junk yard'n just rarely ever have time. And yes I know I need a whole new throttle shaft, I was just hoping somewhere out here in cyber space I could find a shaft or whole carb for $20-$30. Everything on eBay is too high for what it is. I can rebuild a 350 for the price of a USED carb! Guess if I have no luck at the local chevy gold mine, it's getting a small block :D

I'd be real interested in your 292 should you go SB.  That is the only motor I haven't had in any of my squares...

I appreciate it, but my grandpa bought the truck new, so I want to keep the motor. Truck only has 81,000ish miles. I love the sound of the old motor, it's just tired and only gets 10mpg at it's best. I'll probably go through it and out new gaskets in, and maybe a whole rebuild and then put it back in later on when it gets historical plates.

Surprised to hear that it is getting tired with the low miles on it.  If it were me I'd go aftermarket 4 bbl intake and small carb of some sort.  Love the I-6's in any form but hate the carbs on them...  That is probably an integral head being a 1986 but I have never had a 292 and have only seen pictures...

I probably will when it goes back in. But for the time being a small block is my better and cheaper choice. The I6 needs all new gaskets at very least. It looks like it's been submerged in tar/oil. The truck also needs a throw out bearing, and IMO it's easier to pull the motor than drop the trans, t-case, driveshafts plus unhook all the shifter stuff. SOOOO......I'm gonna put a temp motor in while I revamp the ol 292. I just wasn't planning on doing it until summer.
