Major help needed
« on: March 16, 2014, 04:04:34 pm »
I was handed a 79 c20 project truck from my father in law... I haven't worked on a truck in 14 years so things are extremely rusty in my brain.  Got LOTS of major parts, my big problem is, its a true frankenstein truck.  He didn't keep real track of small parts like bolts and nuts or brackets or hoses... SO here goes my dilemma.  Bought lots of parts and brackets, I have almost all the bolts (ordered the wrong ones for the alternator), but I can't seem to figure out where each accessory is suppose to mount.  I have the alt, upper left, I think the AC is upper right, but seems REALLY long to fit there, and bottom right won't work cause the PS pump goes there and its the only place I can fit.  Does anyone have a picture or diagram or somewhere I can go to refresh my brain on how the heck to put a 350 back together?  Accessory wise I mean.  exhaust, carb, distro, alt, ps, ac, etc etc etc.  Where did you find the brackets?  I am trying to piece this thing back together, but it feels like him tearing it apart and then me trying to put it together with no knowledge of anything from the beginning feels like I am setting up for failure... any help is appreciated!

First welcome to the site.  Have you picked up a manual yet ?  Even a Haynes manual will do wonders for what you are looking for.  You can also look through the members rides here and see pics and tell where everything goes.
I am sure if you give it some time someone will have something laid out and diagrammed to post for you.

There are illustrations in the factory 1979 Service Manual located in our Technical Pages that should help.  Have patients downloading the manual; at 1,033 pages it is a big file that may take several minutes.  Save the file to your hard drive for faster access in the future.

Here's an underhood pic of a stock as-built 1979 for sale on the net.

Here's a clearer view of a 1979 Camaro as-built that looks the same.

If you plan to install AC with headers you will need this. The spacer is just a piece of 1/2" galvanized pipe that I cut and painted. It was not provided with the bracket from Hooker.

If you install AC with the stock exhaust manifold the bracket for the rear of the compressor will look like this.
Note the picture that is label "Another" is the AC bracket. I had the one on my truck but I also had one off a 78 GMC C15 and they were different. It was a larger stamped out piece than the one from the Chevy.
The power streering pump and the AC brackets kind of overlap when going together. I put the power streering pump on first and then figured out the AC bracket.

I hope this helps and good luck.

It'll save you a lot of grief if you replace both battery cables (to starter and alternator bracket) and check all your grounds.  We've had several loss-of-power/electrical failures on this forum so far this year that were due to internally corroded cables.  And missing or bad grounds cause complete mayhem in the electricals.
