okay guys, I actually got my tax return that I didn't expect(long story). So I will be going with vortec heads...my brother can get them at 20% off of $299 each. I will be using a JEGS vortec/carb intake with an adapter for the TBI and Lunati Voodoo cam. So that's sorted out, now for exhaust, fuel lines, fuel pump, floor pans, rear tires and tail lights to get it road worthy.
heads are Spartan/ATK

Are the heads machined for the higher lift on the cam? Vortec heads will only go .420 to .460 lift.

If it is the factory TBI ECM you will need a chip burned for the changes

Who knew an engine build could be so frustrating? It was supposed to be a simple build...fix whats broken, change the cam and done. Then my dad decided we're adding tbi...which meant a different cam choice and wiring and new fuel lines and pump. Then when we looked at the old heads we found they need a valve job so he decided i'd buy new heads...350 tbi heads...which i don't think will satisfy me. I talkes to him about it and he told me its tbi heads or smog heads. I want vortecs, since i got my tax return he gave me the okay for vortec heads. So i ordered vortecs...now my brother tells me my dad is mad at me for ordering vortecs and that it'll cost atleast $400 more to use vortecs over tbi heads. I'm tempted to forget about the tbi since what i have is from a 305 and use the quadrajet i already have. Oh and he insists on using egr and vapor canister and all the other ugly smog stuff which of course i would have to buy because my truck has none of it. Yet his truck doesn't have any of it...just a $1600 short block with summit camel hump heads a cam thats too big rpm air gap intake quadrajet and headers (which he is dead set against my truck having because it doesn't need them). My truck is being built to be a daily driver that i can take to meets and run at the strip everyone once in awhile and enjoy...something fun to drive...not something just to drive from point a to point b. It's my hot rod...not his restoration...if i were gonna restore it i would leave the 6 in it and make it 100% stock.

If its your truck and your money, do what you want. Personally, I wouldn't even bother with a small block, swap in a 5.3/4l60e. Then you have an easy 300+hp, overdrive and 20+ mpg with a stock 5.3.
