79 K10 header clearance?
« on: March 24, 2014, 11:45:57 am »
Hey guys,

I have a 1979 k10 4x4 with a 350/auto with a 203 transfer case. . I'm planning on installing a set of Summit full length headers with 3" exhaust from the collectors on back. I was wondering if anyone has had any kind of clearance problems with doing this and if theres any advice on problem area i need to look at.

Great site BTW.. New here and loving all the info

yes, if you search for it everyone who has 4x4 their headers dont clear the suspension unless they use hooker headers

Hooker 2453 is known to fit.  Those are the ones I have -- no problems.  2453-1, -3, and -4 are coated, but the bends are the same, so they should work as well.

Has anyone had any issues with running the 3 inch pipe?  My current pipes hug the tranny/transfer case pretty close and i was wondering if the 3 inch would cause issues.

A single 2.25" pipe will easily handle exhaust flows up to 200 hp, so 2.25" duals will easily handle exhaust flows up to 400 hp, which you are unlikely to get out of your 350 without LOTS of modifications.

3" duals 1) are unnecessary, 2) are a waste of money, and 3) may cause you clearance problems.  It's pretty tight under there.

One thing I notice about the Hooker 2453 vs many other headers, including the summit (which are re-badged  Flowtech 11500FLT's), is the Hooker 2453 has 1 5/8" primaries and 2.5" collector vs 1.5" primaries and 3" collector of many others.  I think this may account for the better clearance.  The Flowtech 11506FLT use the same 1 5/8" primaries & 2.5" collector as the Hooker 2453.  So they should theoretically have the same fitment.  Also both companies, Hooker and Flowtech are owned by Holley.  Anyone have experience with the Flowtech 11506FLT?

well just about finished my exhaust. Got it back to the mufflers and just need to get some more pipe to run it out the back. Had no problem with the Flowtech headers hitting any suspension or any thing. Headers were actually the easy part of the install.

Truck runs good and sounds nice.
ty for the help

Post the Flowtech model number you used, please, for future reference of others.

Thanks!

I used the Flowtech 11500FLT headers. Truck is a 1979 k10 4x4 shortbed with a 350 engine/th350/203 transfer case and no A/C. Headers bolted right in without any clearance problems.  These wont work on angle plug heads according to their info.
