exhaust question
« on: March 24, 2014, 08:48:49 pm »
So I'm going to need to replace the exhaust under my 79 LWB.  It is currently a true dual exhaust that exits straight out the rear of the truck around the spare.  My question is this, Is there any benefit to running the pipes straight out over the standard turn out behind the wheels?  What about turning them out in front of the rear wheels?  Is there any actual benefits to be gained or is it purely asthetics?

First check with your local laws.  Second turning them out before the wheels is loud.  I do not think it is any benefit by going straight back, but personally I think they look better that way.

Not much benefit at all, but if your burning oil out the back could soot up the tailgate.  Side will blow down the road.  In front of the tires could be loud if too close.

just rebuilt the motor so hopefully it wont be burning any oil :)  I have glass packs on it now so it is already pretty loud so will probably avoid turning them out in front of the wheels.  Any recommendations on mufflers that give that deep V8 sound on acceleration but then moderates some at highway speeds?  These GP's are loud all the time!(not that that's a bad thing)

I am going to try these on my truck when I get it going later this year.
Dynomax VT, if you read at the bottom of the page , it say's it has a valve that redirects the flow when cruising for a no drone sound, but when you get into it it opens up and is loud.

I have used Dynomax super flows and they sounded good to me.

Flowmaster 50 series give the sound I think you are looking for.  They are throaty on acceleration but calm down a lot at cruise.  As far as where to turn them out I'd say that if you are towing something, like a white boat then turn them out behind the axle.  If not you will blow black crap all over your white boat.  Ask me how I know...

I have glass packs too, it sounds cool when I mash it, but are a little obnoxious for me when just cruising.  Also, I live next to a church and always feel a little dumb when the truck is warming up in my driveway roaring at 3 grand until I kill the choke.  It probably looks like I'm sitting there with my foot on the gas just being a jerk.  Oh well..

Thanks for all the replys and suggestions.  I will definitely be doing some looking at all the different ones that have been recommended.  Most of the time it comes down to what I can realistically afford, but I have gotten lucky a few times at swap meets and on CL.  Im leaning towards straight out the back just because I kinda like the way it looks.  Not planning on much towing, dont own a white boat ;) and besides, the flames always come out the back of a rocket ;D

I use straight back true duals with flowmaster 44s. I love it, it is aggressive when you smash it, but moderate when cruising (still know its an old truck) however with me because I do not have overdrive, if I am passing someone on the high doing 70-75, it gets a little loud because the RPMs are up.
