emissions on inline 6
« on: April 13, 2014, 06:06:41 am »
Ok guys got a question. Recently purchased a 1980 c10 with inline 6. The top of the valve cover has some sort of emission set up with lines running to the head. My question is can i remove this and plug the head so i can dress my engine up. Plus it sound like that crap is leaking air. I am not familiar with this as my nova with an inline 6 didnt have this. Also i stay in alabama so we dont have emission laws or inspections. Oh by the way it is a 250 inline6. Thanks

Wow, that year had a lot of stuff on the trucks for emissions.  If it is on top of the valve cover I would say it is the EGR valve, to see you emission hose routing you can see it in the tech section in the 1980 service manual, starting in section 6E-35 (page 777).
If it is the EGR valve, I do not know if you want to remove it, the EGR valve helps your car more efficiently and completely burn fuel by recirculating a portion of your exhaust and running it through the combustion process again. This results in a cooler, more complete burn of the fuel which decreases you car's noxious emissions by prohibiting the formation of some harmful gases.
Other than that, if you don't care you can remove it and plug everything I guess, you might have a slight fuel smell from time to time from extra unburnt  gases.  I do know when one goes bad that it effects your engine's performance and can even make it not run.

It has been a while but pretty sure you can remove it.  You will have to address everywhere it goes to also.

Integral head smog issues

Got a chevy 250 with integral head that has some sort of smog setup on top of valve cover and plumbed into head. Can this be removed and plugged. It's sucking air like crazy and whistles when I accelerate.

Can you post a pic before we assume we know what you are talking about, so we can give you the right information.

Bigal04, it looks like you have an integrated head with air injection.  Is there an air pump mounted above the alternator?  From my experience you remove the air pump and plug the lines.  Make sure the plugs seal well or you will have an exhaust leak as the air was pumped into the exhaust manifold to make the early catalytic converters work better.

Good luck and RollTide!
