My 8 ft. stepside
« on: April 22, 2014, 12:19:25 pm »
Hey all, I know this thread is pretty old now, but I thought I'd share my 8 ft. stepside and finally make a first post. I don't know where my bed came from, but I can see the yellow beneath the spray paint black the last owner put on it, so it was probably an industrial bed of some sort. And I agree with Zieg and False, all the 8 ft.'s I've seen are either from industrial trucks or farm trucks out here in the midwest. Also, I noticed you're in Hebron, Zieg. I've never seen or even noticed your truck and you only live like a half hour away from me.

This was totally supposed to be a post on a different, older thread about 8ft stepsides, but whatevs. I'll post more pictures when I get a chance and make the thread all about my truck and its issues and whatnot :D I'll head over to the welcome board, too.

I don't take my truck out often.  Been in the 4th of July parade in Hebron, Thursday night cruise in Crown Point, Saturday Cruise in Lowell, Valpo on Fridays, Pavs in Hebron on Tuesdays.  I only have it out a dozen times or so a year.

Bring it out to the Crown Point cruise nights! I just saw you were selling it on Craigslist, so I'd love to get the chance to look at an extended cab before yours is gone ;D heck, I'd even trade my big, rusty ol' stepside for it if you were willing!

Anyway, onto my truck, now that I got the photos ready. It's an '82 RUSTY GMC C1500 with a '77ish 8 ft stepside that needs a ton of work due to previous owners not knowing what they were doing and not taking any care of the truck. It's got a rebuilt (with headers and a newer intake off my old S10) 305 and a badly rebuilt TH350 that has poured its fluid all over my parents' driveway about three times. No matter what I do to that transmission, it seriously just finds a way to leak all the time. I have no idea what this truck was used for when it was new, but it came pretty basic except with heavy duty suspension all around. And apparently someone came across an 8 ft stepside bed at some point but very much so neglected it like they did the cab and rest of truck. It was in rougher shape when I got it, but I've tried my best to bring it back to having original parts and interior and whatnot (like the seat and steering wheel and radio, which were all gone and changed). I can't even begin to explain just how much wiring and other stuff (like the brights) I've had to cut out or rewire or turn back to original to repair it and get stuff working again. Also, this baby's at 384,775.6 miles, which is the one reason all the rust and worn out EVERYTHING makes some sort of sense.

At 384,775.6 miles, it just means that someone got real good use out of it.   ;)

Yeah, that's true, they sure did get some good use out of it. The PO used it to haul lawn equipment around and drove it to the steel mill he worked at like every day on the high way. I still have the little Mittal parking tag in the window actually. I just wish the guy would've taken better care of it and didn't butcher so much wiring and take so much original stuff out.
