looking for a non expensive posi rear

Does anyone have any suggestions on any rearends that i can pull from another vehicle that would get me posi traction?
I know i can order a new one but im looking to save a little money where i can.
Another thing: I have a TH400 tranny and only gears that i can shift to is Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and one more gear below Drive. (not sure if that is all im supposed to have). I would imagine there should be 1,2, Drive and so on. Does this sound normal or is there something wrong with my linkage or tranny. The likage looked fine to me but im not sure what is goin on.

     What rear end do you have in your truck ?  A good place is e-bay or craigslist as you probably know for used, or a junkyard.
     I would check your linkage first for the shifting and make sure it is not getting bound up, then try disconnecting the linkage and shift through the gears with your hand down by the transmission to make sure the transmission can shift through all the gears.

Do you get two upshifts when in drive? Like first, then second, then drive?

If so then you have a linkage problem.

First off there are no inexpensive posi rear ends. There are only the spendy and REALLY spendy ones. I have seen a lot of guys run the newer 14 bolt rear with success. I've also heard if you pull one from a ZR2 S10 that they were all posi but have never ran one myself. You'll need to be around 60" wide so the camaros, novas and the like will be much too narrow. The junkyard route is a great way to save some cash in this department, but it also involves a lot of searching as what you are looking for will have likely been optional in any vehicle you find it in. And of course there is always craigslist. Best of luck.

The welder is an option if dragging the outer tire on every turn is ok with you. But i have snapped more than my share of gm axles in demolition derby cars after welding. The heat is extremely hard on them, but I'll contiunue to do so on every derby car i build lol

If you can find one from a 88-98 truck you can use it ( it is wider but puts the track equal to the front roughly) BUT you will have to weld new spring and shock mounts on to it...

Or you can take the carrier and axles from the 88-98 and put them in yours if you have a 10 bolt. If I remember correctly I think the axles are 7/16" longer. I used some Buick roadmaster drums that where a little bigger then the trucks.

i have the 12 bolt rear end. I cant seem to find anything online that clearly says what other rear ends would be posi and fit from other vehicles.

Its gonna take some junkyard searching, theres no way around it that doesnt involve a catalog. They were optional in anything it came in so its not as if you can just go find one model of vehicle and presto theres a posi. width will play a big factor here as well
