Tilt wheel conversion
« on: May 07, 2014, 09:53:59 am »
I have a 73 c10 shift, the steering is non tilt, I want to know if I can take the tilt out of an automatic column and put in mine? So I can tilt the wheel but not have the auto stick there, I know it will be easier to just buy a column but someone gave me their old auto column and said its possible to do the swap......

we just put a tilt column from a 82 automatic in a 77 manual

we had to change out the shaft all the way to the rag joint.
the shaft was different in how it attaches to the column  but if you get the entire shaft it will bolt up to your old rag joint.

we just  knocked out the pin and removed the automatic  shift lever from the collar

Im sure someone sells a manual collar, but we didnt want to pay for it and spend the time swapping it, and no one is gonna notice anyway.

the wiring harness plugs for the turn signals  are the same, but the other wiring  plugs are reversed,  you just twist the dash wire and plug it in backwards.   the switch on the older one is a pusher, and the newer ones are a puller, so GM just flipped the switch, bolting the bracket on the opposite side.

your milage may vary,   I know the donor was a  82, but our truck is a mutt, a mish mash of several different years.
