Gauge bezel questions.
« on: May 08, 2014, 01:51:08 am »
I picked up two bezels in the junkyard the other day. Have a few questions about them.

I was told by the guy at the junkyard that the one on the top was an 81-87 style and the one on the bottom was 73-80 style. However, my 1983 K10 has one exactly like the one on the bottom, with the exception that the one in my truck is cut and hacked full of holes.

So I've looked around at all the bezels I could on Google images and what not. So far im only seeing two styles. One like the top one pictured above with the huge A/C or heater vent in the bottom left, and the other style has the cutouts for the headlight switch and wiper switch, but the rest of that bottom left corner is just solid.

So my next question is what is this slot in the bottom left of this one for? There is a piece that is removable to make the slot even bigger. I haven't seen any like this so far in my searches. The one in my 83 K10 has a huge chunk cutout in the same location for an old Kelsey Hayes brake controller, but looks like it was originally one of the solid ones I was talking about.

New bezel:

I believe the slot you are talking about was the "camper special" versions of our trucks, could be wrong though, but I do believe it was for the brake controller on the camper special.
See this thread which talks about the differences. (sorry no pics in this thread)
Someone should compile a 73-87 dash bezel difference and place it in the tech section.  Lets see if one of the moderators read this and puts it in there.

Thanks for the info and the link. That makes sense.

Well if they don't, then I will try my best to make one myself.

This tripped me up once too. My 85 K10 bezel was hacked up by the PO and I went to a junk yard to get a replacement. Ended up with an 83 bezel, which has the wiper control on the left side panel, so obviously I could not use that. Luckily I had it exchanged no sweat. But yeah, 81-87 bezels are not all the same. I want to say they changed in 84. Not sure though.

That's what folks are saying in the other thread. Wish I could find the original gauge bezel thread they are talking about.

My 85 c10 custom has the top one.

Since one has the air vent, do you think it may be a "factory air" vs "no factory air" bezel?

Years that are different.  73-74, 75-76, 77-80, 81-83, 84-88, 89-91.  Did you look at the link in my above post.  (the green word that says "thread").

Yes I sure did. But in that thread they talk about another original thread that discussed gauge bezels. I was kind of hoping that the original one had pictures.

I haven't found the pictures, but there are 2 differences in what you have.  The top one is a 84-88 AC version that someone hacked the radio section out of.  The other one is a 81-83 NON-AC version.
The wiper switch moved to the stalk in 1983.

When you compile your thread, I would like to donate a picture of my bezel. I have a 79 Cheyenne C20 with factory A/C. It's the higher level trim package.

I started an "Official Gauge Bezel" thread in the interior section. Just post it there whenever you're ready.
