Crazy idea for a transmission cooler?
« on: May 09, 2014, 08:46:03 pm »
As stated on a previous thread, I want to install an external cooler on my '86 C10 TH400 transmission.  I have looked at aftermarket coolers and will probably purchase one when you guys tell me this is a bad idea..

Do you see anything wrong with using the old A/C condenser coil as a transmission cooler?  Obviously removing any orifices and making some custom fittings, and of course, flushing it out with a bunch of solvents and cleaners and drying it extra, extra good before doing so..

It looks relatively easy to do and there's a heck of a lot of surface area there.

Your thoughts?

I did that on my '84 Z28, Never had a temp gauge on the transmission so I can't say how well it cooled it, but it seemed to work.  Never had any issues with the trans.

Great, thank you.  Sounds encouraging.  I will probably install a gauge just to see how well it works.
