Nv 4500/242 into a 82
« on: May 29, 2014, 11:48:36 am »
I have a chance to get a Nv 4500 tranny and a 242 transfer case for $500.  Is it practical to swap that into my 82 K10?  I re did the body a few years ago with nice paint so I love everything about the truck except the "dump truck" tranny.  It works fine but is no fun to shift on a daily basis.  The newer trannies seem to shift much more "car like" plus of course the overdrive.  I believe that transfercase is a drivers side shaft that will not work with my axle and I don't want to change my axle.  I looked at the Advance Adapters that will hook that tranny to my existing transfer case but it is big bucks.  Do you have any other suggestions?  Thanks for your suggestions.

242 its the one they used in hummers mopar also used them. drivers side drop, so the t-case would be no good. but you can put a 205 on it your going to have to find a 85-91 (round pattern) 205 32 spline kind of getting harder to find but you can find them.

I have a 208 now.  Does the 4500 shift easier than what I have now?  If not, then there's not much reason to change.  I don't really need the OD.

Nv 4500s shift extremely easy and the .76 overdrive is also nice like Irish said the 205 round pattern
Will work or go to advance adapters and use your 208 all in all the 205 is a better transfer case

If you are getting a Chevy NV4500, then all you need from AA is a bell housing to use your mechanical clutch linkage.  A NP208, NP241 passenger drop, or a NP205 round pattern will bolt on to the rear housing of the NV4500.  The only problem is that the NV4500 shift tower is further back than what the SM465 tower is, so the TC shift linkage has to be moved further back.  The NP205 shift linkage would probably be easier to relocate.  IMO, I would overhaul the NV4500 before I installed it.  Unless you drove it prior, and knew it's condition.  I really like the way the NV4500 makes my truck feel and drive.  I'm running 235x85R16 tires considering the overdrive, I would run a shorter tire to get more out of 4th gear.
