Stock driveshaft strength
« on: June 04, 2014, 09:44:58 pm »
So I've got a new 383 in my truck with the stock th350 behind it that I'm going to have rebuilt, I'm worried about the driveshaft and rear end tho. The engine was dyno'd at 483hp and 472tq at the crank so my question is will the drive shaft and 10-bolt hold up at all. Or will it just turn into shrapnel when I romp on it?

Did you get new u-joints?  Are you running slicks?  If the tires spin you won't break anything.  On mine right now I have 450hp/500tq at the tire, I had a new driveshaft built for it with that in mind and more....

Everything is stock from the tranny back atm, just trying to figure out where I should be putting my money. Everything is in great condition tho, my grandfather drove it and just putted around in his orchards with it and the occasional trip.

I won't be putting slicks, just a good street tire and I will get new u-joints (suggestions?) it's not running yet, still getting everything else put back together on her for now. Thanks for the quick reply btw!

I was thinking I'd have to get a 14 bolt rear end, are you still running your stock 10-bolt? I'm def going to open the rear diff up just to make sure everything's good.

The driveshaft should be fine
Usually the tires are the limiting factor

Spinning the tires a lot , doing a lot of burnouts will damage the bearings in the diff

When I was 16 I had a 69 thunderbird with the 429 thunderjet. Same as the 429 cobra jet

I was the local burnout king

We'd have contests to see who's car could leave the longest black marks on the road in front of the sheriffs house

We'd listen to the scanner and when we learned he was out of town or 45 minutes away on the other side of the mountain we'd  go for It

Anyhow  long burnouts fried the bearings in several 9 inch diffs  but never changed the u joints.

I got plenty of free tires from the local state park
They had a dozen pickups and while slightly too tall their old takeoff tires usually had some tread left and no use to let em go to the landfill with any tread left

Got pretty good at swapping the diff. About the fourth time I could do it in less than 3 hours

Good deal! That cuts off a huge portion of my budget I was figuring on spending and gets me a few steps closer to having her back on the street. What tranny are you running capt?

We'll roundhouse I'll probably have to stock up on more than a few bearings and tires then cause I definitely plan on roasting a few tires lol!
