In your opinions what would be a very capable mud tire? Dot approved.
2nd question: has anyone found a really good tire that is a really good compromise of off road capable and fuel mileage?

I had good luck with Wrangler AT's, but it depends on what type of driving you are talking about so we really need more info.

When you go into a tire shop, they by law can not put on non-dot approved tires without telling you for one, and two, they more than likely will have you sign a waiver.
When ever I bought tires for my competition rock crawlers I always signed a waiver, they always got trailer'd to every event, they were not really safe for the street anyway and had a top speed of about 40 mph.

I will be moving to an area with competition mud bogs but do not want to have tires specific to only them. For the time around the bogs I would like to throw a set on my 84 scottsdale. Right now it has duratracs. I hear some people put boggers in rear and swampers in front but I would like a single set. Stock class needs dot approved. Looking at gumbo type mud.

I have had good luck with both boggers and swampers in the past, though I would say that I feel like swampers seem to clean out the cleats easier and faster than boggers.

Ground hawgs are dot approved and i love them over swampers, but that being said super swamper did buy them out and changed the rubber compound. before the tires would dry rot over years before you wore them down. unlike my super swampers that wore down pretty fast. i dont know anyone who has gotten a new set of hawgs yet to see how they last
heres some 44s on my truck

Irish.
They look like a street version of the swamper to me. You are saying they have been "more" or "on par" mud capable to you than swamper ( which I was leaning towards). They seem like they would have better street manners. I will look for these after I hear your response on the mud aspect. Koodos on the paint job by the way.

man the swampers i had (only 38s) didnt do anything in the snow unless 4wd was on. i did better with my 94 c1500 than my 79 with 38s when the 4wd was broke. in the mud same deal they would spin easy. it was kind of embarrassing when you have to put it in 4wd just to get to the mud pit. but the hawgs ive only tried the old ones and they are prob 75% or more but they have dry rot cause they lasted so long.
with these 44s they handle like the front is about to fall out (i wouldnt drive them on a curvy road with much speed) my 38 swampers did handle ok on the road but you pay for it with the rubber on the tires. so if i was going to try new mud tires i would go with the hawgs cause i know the desing works great in the mud, maybe not as big as 44s just for safty if it was driven on the road but something that was mainly a mud truck i wouldnt hesitate. i do have a set of humvee tires 37.5/12.5/16.5 that are my road tires if i need them
