Don't kill me but...
« on: June 11, 2014, 06:38:54 pm »
As a for instance...

I'm selling off my van and impala and an old tractor.  Ought to get me $16k at least...

Some of these 01-02 camaros are expensive, but SUPER low miles.

But I'd have to sell off my truck too to get the lowest mileage ones...  Like 20k or less.

I'm the kind of guy who would buy a 20k camaro and DD it, (far as im concerned some lovely soul held my favorite car for me, until i was ready)

Those cars are kind of my achilles heel.  have been for 12 or 14 years.  Would i hate myself for this?   I'm not gonna take what comes along, but buy when the perfect car comes along...  I want this car, or one exactly like it, make it my own, super low mileage, bad.  and drive it...

This is the camaro i want, perfectly...  this one...  yep

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB_LrDmZBwA

And

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNQUp9ju4VY

This is the only car on the earth I'd consider selling my truck for.  period.  01 or 02.  sunset metallic, or black, must be SS.  period.

Am I stupid?  am I doing wrong?  What do you guys think?  I know this is a squarebody site, and im thinking of getting rid of my square...  but besides the obvious conflict of interests...  what doi you guys think?  at minimum I got to put $5k into the truck...  minimum.

Or get my camaro i've wanted since i was 21...  badly i might add.  but i had a kid..  ya know...  no chance.  i have a huge chance now, and lots of em are brand new 02 cars...  i want one so bad, but i dont know if i want it bad enough to part with my truck, and i think ill have to part with my truck to makew it happen...  this is unpleasant to say the least, but i need your guys' help...

Do i keep the truck get another crappy car, or sell it all off, and get the car ive coveted for over 12-14 years now...  I dunno.

Thanks fellas,
Kenny

I loved that car so much back in the day I went and test drove em new at every dealer in 50 miles from my house...  make em think im rich, then they let me hot rod it...  get back n im like umm i dunno ill give ya a call...  Love that ls1 5.7 with 6 speed.  never tried an auto, thats kind of blasphemy to me...

Respectfully, Kenny, wasn't that your Granddad's truck?  What occurred?

What changed in your livelihood that you no longer need a hauler?

Look around and see where you are.  Where do you see yourself in, say... five to ten years?

Doing what?

Cars and such are just stuff.  What will this particular 'stuff' do for you?  How will it impact your future or otherwise help you attain your goals?  Have you defined your goals?  What do you want to have?  What would you need to do in order to have that?  What would you have to be in order to do, so you could have what you want?  How the Camaro fits in with your responses should help provide your answer.

the camaro isnt a family car, your a family man now. this is why i got my 2nd impala after crashing the 1st. its a 4 door family car and its supercharged for my "need for speed" side. im happy with a 300hp car(only 250 for now) and a 400tq truck. but thats just me. i dont think 500hp as a dd would really be that fun, weekends yes but back and forth to work? you would be working just to fill her up

Why spend extra for a low mileage if you're gonna DD it and rack the miles up?

How it was cared for is more important than miles

But Irish has a point.   If you got chill'rins. A 2 door vehicle is not real useful   Especially if it's your only vehicle
Not bad if it's a weekend toy

If you need a fast family hauler you could get a AWD Astro van with a V-8 conversion

If it were me I would try to find a way to keep the truck and obtain the Camaro of your dreams.  One will pop up, eventually...  It took me 3 years of searching for my extended cab.  The novelty has worn off and it is on the market.  My 85 C20 is just waiting to be finished which I will never sell.  Luckily my DD is a company car and the family car is adequate that my wife motors around.  Your history with your truck is memories and when it goes you may want to find it like your first white one.  The one I'd like to have back was stolen but my white 85 way my uncles and I will never sell.  My $.02

GM made 13,095 Camaro SS 6 speed coupes between 2000-2002.
How many of Your Granfather's trucks did they make?
Sure, they made millions of 73-87's, but this is the 1 you gotta keep.

My livelihood changed cuz I fell off a house and hurt my back and most of my left side very badly.  Enough I'll never do construction again...  It is grandad's truck.  I asked him what he thought about getting the camaro I want and he told me if i wanted to, sell it all and get it.  he's not to attatched to things.  Every man need a hauler, but I've actually used my truck for hard work so little, and I live in the house next to my dad who has a truck, so I'd always have one available if need be.  I see myself being single like I am now.  I had kids, it turned out perfectly horrible for me, no matter how i tried or how much money i threw at it...  Other than my parents and ONE really good friend I've known for 19 years, who I'd trust with my life, I'm alone in the world.  But I don't feel alone.  I think I have what I need. I'm okay with how things are now, not looking to impress people...  only myself  :)

I lost my family man, other than my parents...  I took up with the wrong girl, and my kid's worse than either of us ever dreamed of being...  and we weren't easy to handle children...   Guess I'm kinda in that Won't need a four door and don't want one place.  ya know the dads who tried but got wrung out anyway...  If I get the car it'll be insured under stated value, like my truck is now.  I'm happy with my truck the way it is, but if I have a car it better be bad as heck...  I grew up around a whole neighborhood of hot rodders with mustangs camaros n vettes...  cars should kick butt.

And i work like heck to fill my truck up now, always have, camaro will be cheaper.

Basically that is I wanted one NEW SO BADLY.  I'd like to have it new as I can.  "Id Like to"   and they got cheaper since they started making camaros again...

I have no chillins, but when we did, I had a 77 C10 and She had a 91 Camaro.  it's doable...  not the easiest thing, but we had a camaro and a truck...  its doable...  pita sometimes, but that's ok to me.

I just don't have a family as such.  haven't seen my kid in two years.  I did all I could, paid all i could.  kicked in over $65k one year...  wasnt enough...  went bad enough i told them to go and leave me alone forever.  hate me if ya will but i gave the ol college try for 15 years.  so it's just me, and whatever girlfriend i have at the time.  Got a house, got a tractor, got a van car n truck...  gonna keep the house n tractor...  want a bad car.

I'm hoping to do that.  thats the best case scenario...  I think I may the way prices are looking...  itll take a long time for the novelty to wear off that camaro...  Ive had several close to that cars...  350hp 176mph...  novelty never wore off...  and i think those camaros are so pretty, with a V8 Growl, and a manual...  Trucks the only hiccup in the process.  I can see selling it, but not being without it, ya know?   grandad told me to basically follow my dreams and get rid of it (as he put it)  He told me if i sell it tho i have to give him a hot rod ride in whatever i buy.

Keep the truck, buy a 100K 02 comaro, strip it down and rebuild it the way you want save $$$$ :>

I've been thinking about that. theres one out there for $11k  with wind damage thats not too bad.  maybe get it and put $3k into paint n rims...  oh it has 7K seven thousand on it

Sure, they made millions of 73-87's, but this is the 1 you gotta keep.

They made two.  first got scrapped cuz i pissed my mom off...  the 62.   the 78 i got to get just right.

I had decided there's no way, except HE is 95 now and told me to go ahead n get rid of it and get the camaro, but i better give him a ride in it.  That's screwin with me a lot.  he means it.  i have no doubt.

Keep em comin guys.  I'm at some sorta crossroads.  I dont have family to worry with, so I can do what I want, unfortunately...   But it is what it is.  never comin again, I wanna have some fun.  If I can get my butt hauler and keep my load hauler i wanna, but I been letting go of so much, frankly, a trucks small potatoes to what else I've had to let go of.

Just think of this as thinking out loud.  nothings in stone, ever...   I want your opinions.  I value them, and they help me, so keep on with em.  :)

It sounds like you'll be happy with whatever decision you make.  It's just gettin there.  So, don't over-rationalize it.  The only wrong thing to do is "nothing!"  Go with your gut.  You can always change your mind later and do something different.  Work out the details to create your best scenario and go for it.

I either get my to keep my truck and get a camaro, or get a badder camaro.  I can always get a square again.  Like everybody else I'd rather have a light hot rod C10...  my truck will never be that weighing 5300lbs.

I dunno.  I'm not talked into anything yet.   ot out of anything yet.

I just grew up around hot hot hot cars, and had a couple of scary bad cars...  i want another one.  I know how to handle em better than most, im no pro, but i aint wrecked yet...  Drove 500hp, drove 196mph.   i jes cant see the ol truck doin that...  dont know if I'd want to...  HA HA HA

God i want that car tho...  all I'm asking you guys is basically with all i've said, am I being stupid?  If you don't tell me the truth and sugar coat it i'll take offense, not if you bluntly tell me your opinion...  that'll only make me respect you.

I am BLUNT on things like this, hope yall can be too.  I respect bluntness, not cruelty...  ya know...

I did this when we got rid of the 69 mustang...  painful sting.

I did this when i got rid of my 77 c10... painful sting.  got my focus tho, and it is the best car i ever had.  dont regret it, but when we left the car lot in my new focus, and i saw my truck fading in the rearview, i felt as tho i had left a good dog at the pound to be killed.  im sentimental.  maybe if i do it now and grandad likes the new car it'll all be okay.

Somethin like this...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqjW8Ko2M5c

I miss that... grew up with stuff far badder than that.  like 8 second cars n such...  but street driven...  i know i know...  but we used to could do that...  my dad scared me as a child more in the car than on his motorcycle...  lmao

I wouldn't wanna get outa third or fourth tops in my truck...  my truck gets scary above 90...  so it never goes 90...  I went 115 once.  never again...

I don't know if this is a life test to let go of stuff or not.  If i could let go of my truck and let anyone else on the earth touch it, I can let go of anything.

I dunno, ya know...  eh

When I feel "compelled" to purchase something I really want - something I can't get my attention off of - something I agonize over and think about constantly, but procrastinate on acquiring... I usually discover that not purchasing the item was the right thing to do.  When a purchase is logical and logistically realistic for me, I have no hesitation, no second guessing, and no regret.  Life is good.

If you're sentimental, parting with your granddad's truck, now, might bring some regret down the road.  You can always get another truck, but will you always be able to recover your granddad's truck and the memories it represents?  It strikes me that you need to be comfortable with this specific point not to have latent regrets.

Would it be possible for you to take your granddad with you once you've narrowed it down some, and include him in a test drive for some feedback before you lay out any cash - watch the expression on his face for clues?

yeah granddad may be ok with it or so he says, he seams like the type to sacrifice everything to make someone close to him happy. but once hes gone you will want your truck back. there's plenty of songs out there about a brother driving his brothers truck or a son driving a truck that has his and his dads memory.

i think most of the younger people on here me included love these trucks because its what we grew up with. i went out and bought a strangers truck cause it was the closest i could have to my memory. you have your grandfathers truck there's no closer than that. its kind of like my wifes 94 1500. its only 2wd it only has a v6 but it was her first truck a birthday gift from her parents. and i plan on fixing it up here soon but not till im dont with my crew cab. but that truck is something i dont see her parting with nor will i let her
