Trans. swap? 3 on tree to 4 spd.
« on: November 01, 2004, 04:08:00 pm »
I have a 76 swb c10 pickup and it came w/ 3 on the tree and I was wondering if the factory (top loader as I call them) 4 speeds that came in theese trucks will fit. I know the trans. tunnel is bigger in the 4 speed trucks right? That's why I ask if it would work or not being a 3 speed on coloumn factory 2wd. Thanks for the help.

You have to cut the center out of the 3 speed truck. The floor is stamped for it so you just follow the line. When you get your 4 speed get the center from the same truck they are bolted in, and it will set right on top of your floor, then just run some big self tappers in the holes where it was bolted into the 4 speed truck.

I tried that with mine, the 4 spd hump was taller than my existing hump.  I would reccommend a 2 inch body lift or cut out the WHOLE center section from the firewall back to the seat and weld in one out of a 4 speed.

Why didn't bolt / screw it in?

As Blazin said, the high hump trans is just a low hump with the center cut out and the high hump piece bolted on.  If you get the bolt in piece out of a high hump and lay it on your low hump you will see what we are talking about.

Ok I never noticed that. I have an 86 4x4 auto on column and a 76 original 3 on the tree I never seen a bolt in part on the 86 before. Well not when I put in carpet and stuff. I wasn't looking for it at the time either.
So I'd have to get the top hump off a 4 speed truck or just one from a big hump like an auto 4x4 or something right?

I have seen a few 85 through 87 that the hump was part of the floor like the 2 wheel drives. As far as I know all the older ones where bolted in. The one from a 2 wheel drive 3 speed with the granny low is a direct bolt in. A 4x4 one will need a plate over the transfer case hole. The automatics ones are stamped for the standard shift hole just need to be cut.

Typically the later model Auto 4x4's had the high hump molded in.  All factory floor shifted Manual trans trucks had bolt in high humps.

I need to hit some junkyards up around here, bad thing is no old chevy's in the close by ones, if their is they've been rolled cuz they are trashed. I did notice on the 4x4 the factory 4 speed hole was stamped in the hump. I asked because I was going to get a top loader/factory 4 speed from a chevy box truck before but ended up gettin one from an old gm muscle car, its a saginaw 4 speed but is messed up, its like its stuck in 2 gears, going on flat ground in 1st is like having it in 2nd or third instead of 1st and going up a hill? forget it you'll start burning the clutch and you'll have your foot burried in it.
I need to find a trans bad, even if its just an old 3 speed like I had in it.

What neck of the woods are you in? I have a three speed with granny low which is what I believe you are referring to as a top loader for sale $100.00. I am in central New Hampshaa.
