chrome trim help
« on: August 08, 2014, 05:56:08 pm »
my 78 Scottsdale two tone has the original chrome that came on it. I have taken it off and am cleaning and reprinting the black strip on them. The truck will be reprinted shortly and the fenders and doors have been replaced with aftermarket, so now trying to figure out how to get this chrome on without drilling holes everywhere. You guys got any idea, such as a double sides tape that will hold them on. any thoughts appreciated.....

Do a search for "trim glue", it is used all the time and even on boats in the water, once cured stays on.  I am partial to 3M, but do your own homework and decide what will work best for you.

Bake, These are aluminum moldings, hollow on the backside.

2tone, Do some scrounging on trucks with the same trim...gather extra of the square Black plastic "pads" that have the Two sided tape on them. The doors & bedsides (& some gates) have a bunch. Grab enough to use everywhere except where the factory used the exposed screws. I have done this numerous times.
The best, safest, ideal way I've found when it comes time to layout the Two-tone lines is to use tape to hold the moldings in place where they belong, drill the holes you need (back of the fenders, ect.)
There are a couple different ways I've done the painting, taping on the Two-tones...some are easier/better than another based on the center color. We can talk about my thoughts if you would like. Lorne

Lorne, you are right about the black plastic pieces that fit the backside of the trim. Does anyone have any idea where I might purchase some of these new, or something that would work. These old trucks are pretty much gone to the crusher in my area....

Thanks for the heads up, the earlier one's I have taken off had a "track" I guess you could call it behind the trim that could be glued back on if you wanted to instead of screwed onto the truck.

Hey guys, found the little plastic pads for.....1.95 each and I need about 40 of them. That is very very expensive, and I have searched the Webb with no luck....anyone have any ideas? Looks to me that a good double sided tape about the same thickness of these pads would work just as well. I hate to spend 80.00 for these things....lol  I got a lot of other places to spend it on that need it worse
