84 k10 with gm 12 bolt rear..broken diff crosspin
« on: August 24, 2014, 11:35:33 pm »
Ok guys so I'm doing that last big stages of doing a custom resto to my baby and as soon as I start tearing into the rear diff I find that the crosspin has been broken in the case/pin for a sometime now. I've been a mechanic for a long time now but I haven't run into this problem yet and frankly I'm kind of stumped on what to do. I can't afford to replace the case so beating on it isn't an option. Anyone have this happen to them and is there a good way to get the rest of that bolt out??? Please help and I'm proud to finally be apart of the square body family :)

Welcome to the site from California.
You did not provide what rear end you have, so I am going to assume a GM 12 bolt since your header says 84 K10.
You do mean the pin inside the carrier that holds the spider gears to the pinion gear assy. correct ?  Is it bent, because if it is the one I am thinking about you should be able to push in on the axles and it should fall out, unless it is bent.

I have seen this many times, unscrew the bolt and the rest of the bolt shaft stays in.Easiest way I have found to get it out is with I die grinder with a small burr.Grind a slot across the main cross pin till you can drive it in ,then remove the rest of the bolt with needle nose

we just were working on a 14 bolt with a bent cross pin. it broke the bolt and slid out a bit on its own and the kid driving it just kept on. well it was bent so bad we cut and hammered but its still stuck in place. he ended up getting another rear
