74 GMC Jimmy Project
« on: September 06, 2014, 03:46:38 pm »
Hey everybody. This is my 1974 GMC Jimmy project that was supposed to be a project for my son and I. But he took off to Az for a while. So, I'm just going to start it without him. First I have to get it from Boise Idaho up to Coeur d'Alene Idaho. About 400 miles. Will have it here at the end of the month.
Here are the stats. 350 with either a spun rod or main bearing. (was already spun when I bought it.) 4spd trans. NP203 t-case. Not sure about the axles. I'm sure they're stock. Not sure about the gearing in the axles either.
I've worked on these old trucks. But nothing to this extent. So I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions for you all. Progress will be slow since work full time, and I'm a full time student. Will probably go months at different times with little or no progress.
A couple of quick questions I can think of right off the bat:
First - CaptKaos, from what I have gleaned from some of the posts, I think you have some sort of parts store? Where might I find that?

Here are a couple of pictures:

That blazer does not look to be in that bad of shape from the 2 pics.  So what damage is there that the pics do not show ?

Both fenders have some rust. And both quarters have rust right above the wheel wells. Here are a couple more pictures that I have found. I had to resize them for the forum. Hopefully you'll be able to see the rust I'm talking about. I'll take some close up pictures when I get it up here at the end of the month.

And then a couple of the engine.
Question. Is that a Q-Jet or Holley Manifold? I know nothing about carbs.

I remember the good old days growing up, we had a 74 or 75 Blazer (I was younger) and I remember the camping/fishing trips and the times we took the full top off.  Great memories.

My dad had a 73 K20 when I was growing up that we took camping, hunting and fishing. That was such a nice truck. He sold it 15 years later with less than 100,000 miles on it. Thing looked like it did when he drove it off the showroom floor. I miss that truck. That's the truck I learned to drive in.

I got to thinking this evening. I've heard that the 383 stroker was a great low engine for low end power. I need a new crank for this project anyway. So, a 383 might not be a bad way to go. What do you guys think?
Also, I know basically it's just swapping the 350 crank with a 400 crank. But is it really that easy? I would think that I would need to change the rods and/or pistons. Any info you guys can share with me would be great.
Also, I'm not sure if it's a 2 or 4 bolt main. I haven't cracked into it yet. Could you do the conversion with either?
