NV4500 Swap into 1985 C30, 6.2l 4 speed granny
« on: September 11, 2014, 09:42:37 am »
Would this be a good swap and how much do I have to modify for the NV4500 from a 1996 C3500 to fit my truck?

Thanks, Stan

It's a GREAT swap!  You might need a bell housing from Advance Adapters in CA.  You need the cross member from the donor vehicle, use a custom adapter (for height), or build a custom cross member.  The transmission mount will sit at the same elevation as the bottom of the frame rails.  You should be able to use all the clutch components except the fork (if you use an AA bell housing).  The shift tower sits further back, so you'll have to fabricate a new hole through the floor cover.  PM me with any other questions.

Tried to PM but did not go thru, Thanks for the advice, I looked over the Advance Adapter site and they deal in 4wd stuff, I have the bellhousing and crossmember/slave cylinder on the NV4500 I bought, Can I use my existing bellhousing/flywheel/clutch setup? what clutch components do I need? The bellhousing on the NV tranny will bolt up but has to be clearanced on the starter side because the 6.2L diesel has a much larger starter than the SBC had.... How about drive shaft? Yolk? Thanks for the help, I just want to get everything ready for the swap before we start, hopefully it will go smooth.

The bolt pattern of the SM465 is different from the NV4500.  You could use everything from the NV4500, if you converted to a hydraulic clutch pedal.  The AA bell housing is used when a person wants to use the same manual clutch pedal.  I don't think there's a difference between 4x4 bell housings and 4x2.  You won't need anything different as far as the clutch itself.  The output splines should be the same.  I'm not sure about the driveshaft length or yoke diameter.  Call AA they'll have someone that can answer all your questions.
