A while back I bought the full wiring kit for my 78 K10 350 from here. Do to life obligations and other issues I was unable to do the project untill now. I thought I would come back and give my feelings about the kit now that it is done.
First off I have no formal electrical experience. The most involved things I have done in the past was wiring up a couple stereo systems and some off road lights. So I can say with some confidence that nearly anyone can do this if you take the time and think things threw.
The good:
-All the seperate sections are bagged seperatly with their own instructions and crimp terminals all along with other parts when needed.
-Color of wires almost always match original so you can reference the old harness if you get stuck
-Wires are very clearly labeled.
-Lots of extra wires you can add as needed for different accessories you might have or add at a later time.
-Plenty of wire to rout the harness how you want in most situations.
There are other pros that I found but these are what stick out to me the most. I did have some problems with the kit as well. I was able to work threw them but they deserve noting.
-Plug for natural safety switch not the right one. You can modify the one in the kit or use your original
-Power for the dash lights has to be spliced in from another source.
-Kit does not come with any wiring for Heat/AC. It only provides a power wire to the begining of the system.
-No wiring for duel fuel tanks but I knew that when I ordered it. If you have duel tanks you will need to wire that by hand.
-Water temp sensor plug was wrong. Had to use original.
-Doesn't come with the plug for windshield wiper switch. You will need to rewire your original one.
-Instructions say it has door jam switches for courtesy lights. My kit did not have them.
-A ground wire that is not labeled as to what it's for. Turns out it's ground for the stereo.
-Kit had 1 extra tail light and marker light that appeared to be slightly used and was not even designed for our trucks as far as I can tell.
Nothing here is a major issue. All of them are simple fixes but I felt it was worth noting.
Tools you will need. Your mileage may vary here:
Screw drivers and a metric socket set with various extentions.
Wire striper
A double crimp terminal tool. Go to amazon. Don't buy that crazy expencive one from AAW.
A soldering iron and torch for connections and heatshrink.
A million zip ties. Ok maybe not that many but I went threw about 400
Leatherman Wave. You can get by with out it but it was my most used tool by far.
Liquid wrench or some other spray for freeing rusted bolts.
Some of the extras I did at the same time:
I added duel batteries.
LED tail lights
Marker and turn signal housings
Modern headlight housings with a separate harness for powering the headlights directly from the battery.
LED bulbs from superbright LED
Total investment about $1600 to $1800 with the kit the special crimpers and lighting extras. It took about a week for me to do it by my self in my driveway. 2 full days on the weekend and any extra time I had before and after work.
If any one has any questions I'll do my best to answer them. I don't have many pics but I may put some up when I'm not typing on my phone.
