Opinions on possible new truck

Hey all, my brother is looking for a truck and we found this one. It seems really nice and far as I can tell it's really a nice truck. Would like opinions and extra info and whether or not the price is right? He is asking $5,000. To much, a good steal, about right?

1970 GMC 2500 Sierra Grande Custom Camper.

-power steering/brakes. Steering workings beautifully, very smooth, moves with one finger,  didn't drive but brakes seem good, rolled forward and reverse easily and stops, pressure was good.

-factory air conditioning, doesn't blow cold but does blow and all parts are there.

-396 big block, headers, dual exhuast, edelbrock carb, once it got fuel in the bowl it fired right up and ran good, sounds solid, no ticks or knocks.

-700R4 trans, rolled forward and back under its own power no problem.

-suspension seems solid and has 3 leaf overload pack on top of rear leafs.

-body seems pretty good. Small crack in one bed rail, no obvious big rust spots or corrosion. I have not been under it yet tho. So didn't look super close yet. Most of the body trim is there, a missing piece is in the tool box.

Interior is really nice, seat is great, headliner great, dash good. It has temp, oil pressure, amp meter, speedo, fuel, and FACTORY TACH! Gauges all seem to work properly.

I have to say, I REALLY LIKE THIS TRUCK, if I had the money I would buy this thing for myself. It hasn't been registered since 2004 so it could have $600-800 in dmv fees also.

Turns out this guy lives with long time friend of my mom who she hasn't seen in years. He had to other trucks he's keeping he showed me. We also talked for awhile about my truck, he seems very honest and not lying about anything. He said he wouldn't hesitate to drive the truck to Stockton and back right now, about an 1 hour north of me.

 Seems like it should be a little nicer for the price he's wanting. Then again, if it's an original truck, without any rust "hacked up" repairs, it definitely adds value.

If the 396 is original ( I dunno how to tell.  Maybe the VIN?). Some people worship VINs . And there's no rust.  It might be worth it

Why didn't it get taken for a test drive ?I wouldn't pay that kinda $$ without a test drive


Either way I'd figure on new bushings everywhere
A new gas tank , and sending unit and lines and a professional carb rebuild
(t he ethanol crap in the gas will have destroyed all the lines and sender)

Although that looks like an Edlebrock carb
Doubt it's original   
Shouldn't it be a quadrabog?

Wheel bearings might be an issue after that long

Check on the reg fees and knock that off the price for sure


The factory tach has to be pretty rare if it works

     Actually for the shape that it is in, and if indeed there are no mechanical issue's except the air conditioning.  For California, $5000.00 is a good price for that year and shape of truck.
     Granted I am going off pics and what you have said.  It did say firm, so I have to believe he is set on the price.

I am with Tom on this, a black plate GMC loaded is worth every penny.  3/4 T GMC has leaf springs as opposed to the Chevy coils in back.  Back in that era is where a GMC was much more HD than the Chevy counterpart.

Yep no rust just surface stuff. Nothing actually terminal. Lol

Not sure if the motor is original but it looks it. I will go by the Vin if he decides to get it. I will also drive it lol. I didn't drive it cuz I wasn't sure how serious he would be about it but when I showed him pics he flipped out and was grinning from ear to ear.

I looked at the gas tank and it seemed to be in good shape. I would probably would put a professionally rebuilt Quadra jet on it and go all factory original on it.

It obviously needs closer examination but from the 30 min i spent walking around it checking stuff out it seemed really solid. And all the Gauges to appear to work. The tach holds steady and rolls up and down smoothly when revved.

Round house. Back in the day, 6s and early 70s, the license plates where black with yellow letters. Then in mid late 70's they went to being blue with yellow letters, non were reflective paint either. Now they are the normal reflective white with blue letters. Alot of people like the older plates to go with the older vehicles, I wish I had them for mine. So it's possible that it's the original license plate to the truck.

Gotcha.   In Georgia the state changes to a new design every 7 years

So you throw the old one away
And the plate stays with the owner.  Not the vehicle

Oh that's kinda odd. But it's cool you get to keep the plates.

     They are actually bringing back the original black plate from the DMV.  LTZ C20 you should check that out if you are serious, I have mine on my truck, wouldn't trade them for anything else.

You I know about those bake. My buddy ordered a set for his 79 GMC High Sierra, he got the blue and yellow plates with personalized print. I was gonna order to but that's when I was doing the engine and trans and didn't have extra cash and missed the order deadline. Idk if you can still order them.

GA has hundreds of different plates now

32 college plates
21 out of state college plates
116 different military   Veteran plates
41 other plates
Plus if your vehicle is older than 1970 , you can use an actual original plate , that is from the year your vehicle was manufactured as long as its in good condition and no other currently registered plate has that number / letter combo .   Say , you have a 66 mustang, you find an original 1966 GA plate , take it to the DMV and they enter that number / letter combo in the computer and you can put it on your car

Oh yea, we got all kinds of plates here, handicapped, military active and retired, military purple heart, fire fighters, all kinds of personals and agricultural.
