fuel managment with a turbo?
« on: November 08, 2005, 09:14:00 pm »
Hi all, This is my first post here and I'm in the process of fixing up a 78 gmc stepside the truck currently has a 250 six and a powerglide in it. I'm planning on swapping out the 'glide with a three speed I have kicking around and was originally planning on swapping the motor to a 350, however lately a crazy idea has been running thru my head, why not turbo the six? I'm fairly handy at fabricating things so I dont think the piping and mounting for a turbo would be a big challange, however i dont know a thing about setting up a carb for forced induction. I'm hoping someone here can help me out, what do i need to make sure the motor doesnt go lean when its in boost? I was thinking along the lines of an electric fuel pump with a rising rate regulator, but honestly I'm just shooting in the dark here and was hoping someone could help me out.

Thanks in advance!

Chris

I don't have much knowledge on carb app turbos.  I am working on setting up my current truck with a turbo setup and I am using EFI to control it.  Once I get the V8 running in it, future plans are to twin turbo the 292 I6 I recently purchased to go back in it.

Here is a link of someone who has made a blow-through carb turbo setup.  If you search the forum for Pt96, it should give you all of the info you are looking for.  Plus that site is pretty knowledgeable on blow-throughs.

BTW: don't plan on putting alot of boost through the bottom end without some planning.

Thanks for the link, seems to be alot of good info on there, Its amazing how much i didnt know i didnt know about carbs and turbos. Basicly I'm hoping i can get away with using the stock carb with abit of modification.
I figure I'll probably just wind up building the thing and seeing if i can make it run without going lean in boost. I'm only planning a low boost setup with a smallish turbo, but who knows, if i get it built i'll probably wind up turning the boost up till something breaks:evil
anyways its getting too cold out here to do much wrenching so I figure i have all winter to figure out what i'm doing and start scrounging up parts for the project so hopefully by spring I'll have a better idea what I'm doing
Sounds like you have a fun project on the go, what are you using to control the fuel injection on your truck with boost?
and what turbo are you using?

Thanks again,
Chris

I am using a GM 1227749 ECM that was used in Turbo applications.  I haven't selected the turbochargers for the I6 yet.
