84' K1500 not turning over
« on: October 26, 2014, 09:22:52 pm »
Hello Everyone,

Well I finally got back to my 84 GMC K1500. I can't say rebuild since I just finished redoing the interior. It was running when I parked it in my garage almost 2 years ago. I had got it running after it was sitting for almost 8 years. So I brought it home to fix up and as the old saying goes "either you have time and no money or you have money and no time".  So now I have time but cannot get the truck to turn over. I replaced the old fuel filter which was moist with fuel. I hope the carburetor didn't suffer from old fuel. I poured 8 gallons of premium but it would not turn over. I figure my next step is to check fire. I did change a broken electric carb connector for a new one and now the choke light stays on. I do need to know how to check for spark.  Thanks for either providing answers or pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks Armour.

Are you saying the engine is seized and won't turn at all.  Or, it won't crank over using the starter.  Or, it cranks okay but won't fire and run?  Can you turn the engine by hand with the ignition switched off?  Have you tried charging the battery?

BD: when I posted the truck engine would turn with the starter but it would not run. I switched out the fuel filter and poured gas into the carburetor, turned the key and had the truck try to turn over. After about a pint of fuel poured in fourths at a time into the carb it finally turned over and responded to the gas pedal. It now runs off of both tanks. It does sound like it is idling high now.

Check the Choke fuse.
