American Autowire Classic Update (it shall be done)
« on: November 08, 2014, 07:48:59 am »
Well guys my truck is about to get a whole new wiring harness. I've been trying to truly finalize the resto/mod frame off and just have had no luck getting my gauge cluster to work entirely (the cluster is a piece of crap and that has more to do with it than anything), the dome light circuit is non existent (any and all diagrams I've found have left me frustrated and searching for more answers), there is also some kind of parasitic draw on the entire system where if it doesn't get started within 4 or 5 days the battery could be dead.
My brother and I assembled this harness from 3 different trucks in an effort just to get the beast on the road after 5 years of build time. I'd run out of money and we really wanted to see her run.  The engine harness is off an early 80's 6 cylinder truck we found in a junkyard, the dash harness is out of the 79 2wd we used for a donor cab (this harness had sat in the woods behind the house for 3 years yet still worked for the most part), the rear harness is out of military cucv. Remarkably with a whole lot of TLC, a bath in some dawn dish detergent, simple green, a lot of test light work we were able to get the truck to run reliably with all exterior lights working, the volt meter works, the wipers and radio all work as well.
But that leaves out heater, dash lights, oil pressure, speedometer (not related but still needs to be fixed), courtesy lights, dome light etc. I am lost with it's fuse block as well and it looks like a mess.
The biggest fear I have is a short causing my pride and joy to go up in flames.

So now it begins. It starts with the bench coming out and the dash harness being removed. I am really looking forward to assembling this American Autowire kit. Has anyone done this in their square body and what tips do you have? Did you rent the crimping pliers from AAW or did you buy a set from an outside source? Does it include battery cables? Whatever tips or pointers you may have are greatly appreciated!

Thanks again guys. Kaos that twin turbo you put together is a beautiful work of art man.

Tonka, it doesn't come with battery cables.  If you only plan to do this one renting is an option for the tool.  There is a post from a customer here, let me find it..
Tips are to lay it out first.
