Engine swap ideas for '87 Silverado
« on: October 16, 2006, 09:52:00 pm »
What is involved in swapping a small-block truck to a big-block, and keeping the fuel injection?  My '87 R10 has TBI, but I'm unsure on the small-block parts such as the fuel pumps, computer, and injectors.  Anybody ever done this?  What has to be swapped?

I've considered a 350, but I don't think I'll be happy.  I want a project truck of sorts.

Any other ideas??

You know gas prices will be on the rise again. I personally would stay away from big blocks, unless you simply need the torque/ power. People in this forum are probably sick of me say so, but a 383 stroker will give you tons of torque and hp, built out of a 350 block.  No need to change your springs, mounts, etc...383 stroker

The TB is larger and the injectors flow more.  Computer would need a different tune due to a larger displacement.

Unless you got to have a Big Block(For the Wow factor) Sarg is right.Alot less trouble to stroke the 350, EFI cam and a good torque converter,Get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and turn it up alittle past stock pressure. You shouldn't need a chip/tune.

Save a little extra money and swap an ls1 engine in your truck. There are plenty of mods that are available for those engines, they make great power, and get good fuel mileage to where it could be a daily driver if you wanted it to be.

I have to agree.  That is what I am doing right now.  I am working on a 6.0L for use in my 73-87chevytrucks.com truck.

I just priced a 4.8L with only 9K miles on it locally for $500.  It has everything with it: computer, harness and accessories.  You can find the 4.8L really cheap.  I have seen owners ditching them for as little as $350 (without accessories)  I found a deal on my 6.0L for $800.

wow, pretty good deal.
I have been looking at 6.0l/4l60 combos for my truck...no luck yet on a good price.
I did run into a guy in town, he has an 04 tahoe 5.3/4l60 w/ 9k miles, he'll take $2000, maybe less, too bad my funds are not available right now.
Talk about bad timing, or else I would buy it.
