I want to upgrade my radio
« on: November 28, 2014, 11:29:03 pm »
ok on my 91 i have the big 1.5 DIN style radio looks like this

well i want to put a back up camera up. was thinking about the rearview mirror style but thats around $100. so i can get a new radio for that much and have one that has a screen so i can hook the camera up to it. and also be able to hook my phone up to the radio and play music and sound from google maps.\

but has anyone used one of these radios. i like to keep things looking stock but if its changed i dont want to to stick out. i want it to look like it was made for it. i dont even know if the 1 DIN with the flip up screen will clear the HVAC controls

Nice! That's huge in there lol. I too have been looking for a back up camera. Disclaimer: "Tho I am an excellent backer up-er, and I also use my mirrors and turn my head, I can back up just about anything, cars, trucks, trucks with trailers, box vans, school buses, medium duty flat beds and box trucks. Only thing I haven't done is a heavy duty, semi or big rig, what ever you wanna call it. Stuff you need a class A license for. Heck I can even do tractors with implements and fork lifts."

It is a HUGE pain in the bass to get out and take the tailgate off so I can see the tow ball to back up to a trailer hitch when I'm by myself! Also, when I park in a parking spot and the yahoo in the spot across has parked the radiator of his car on the line and I'm trying not to put my tow hitch thru his grille or silly pastic bumper.

So I have been looking for rear view camera. I have found those  built into a mirror style, however the picture isn't that great and they are some what pricy. Today I found one that a customer actually had installed in his truck, picture quality was impressive, seemed like a simple kit and included the "your getting closer cuz the beeps are faster, you better stop" alarm,(back up object detector/park assist system). Here's a link to the kit. Price seems reasonable too, I like that part.

http://www.nvisionsafety.com/driver_awareness/rearview_camera_system.html

Now as you can see its in a license plate form, however I think with some slight modification it could be made to mount into the bumper as "factory" and be much less visible.  Also, the screen is pretty small yet easy to see, about the same size as GM rear view mirror/camera units. I think that too could be mounted in conspicuously in the cab, maybe in ash tray door?

I would like a mirror with temp and compass and rear camera,  but haven't been able to find one with all three. Dakota Digital makes a nice rear view mirror with temp and comp but no camera, :(. If they made a mirror with temp, comp and a camera with good picture quality I would be first in line. As I very much like Dakota Digital ' s products.

So what do you all think? Know of any good systems or kits?

yeah backing up to hook up a trailer is what i want mine for. my buddy has a "wireless" one for his utility truck but he mounted his on his welder in the front of his bed. it make a nice security tool cause it out of sight and you can watch it if you just sitting. but moisture got under the lens of the camera and the monitor i think stopped working now. you couldnt see the ball from where it was mounted but at least it gave you an ideal. if the radio i get has a dvd player and a/v outputs for that it would be best because i could then mount another screen for the 3 year old to watch. while we go on road trips

on bestbuys web site it lets you select 1.5 DIN and says 28 radios but they are still listed as 2 DIN for some reason.

found this radio but no blue teeth. but that might not be a deal breaker since it has video output

Its very handy for hooking up trailers

Nice radios. I like mine now so it's kinda hard to really need a new one, the deck I have is only about a year maybe 1 1/2 years old.

Roundhouse, I haven't seen those from a Tundra before. I have seen those in GM vehicles before, they are either built into the touch screen radio or into a rear view mirror. The rear view mirror ones are very nice, picture is great, some have the green, yellow and red guidelines,  however, the park assist (object detector beepers) are a seperate system. I have considered pulling the rear view out of a salvaged vehicle but the wiring is extensive and I think is requires input from the cars Body Control Module and ECM/TCM,  to tell it when it's on reverse. Then the BCM turns on the camera and screen and park assist beepers. WAYYY more wiring than I want to try and chase and find and sort out.

That's why I've been looking for stand alone designs, that one I posted by N Vision has had the best picture quality I think I've seen yet.

I put an aftermarket back-up mirror in my pop's Tundra.  The camera connects to the license plate bracket, and is powered up by the back up light.  It transmits a signal wirelessly to the screen-built-into-a-new-mirror-which-clips-over-the-existing-mirror, and works fantastically.

I have seen those clip over the existing mirror style, I don't like them at. You can tell they are added on.

Yeah the "wireless" ones transmit their signal wireless but you need a power wire to power it. So you may not have a wire to the camera to the screen but you have to have a power and ground wire to each

Yea. I'm not against wiring at all, just want a clean, factory type install. If your not using the camera then you would never know it's there kinda thing.

I have seen pin hole cameras for cars. If I get that radio I'll probably get a pin hole camera. Most times my license plate isn't mounted center of my bumper anyway

I would most likely mount some sort of system either in the bumper or that vertical piece of sheet metal at the rear edge of the bed, under the tailgste.
