Steering question for drag use.
« on: December 01, 2014, 08:35:03 pm »
I am currently building up a 85 GMC sierra for the strip. As of right now im transitioning from street/strip to just strip and have always just disconnected the belt to the power steering pump to free up some extra hp. My question is: is there a different steering box that i could use? I was told that a standard steering box would be a lot easier to steer than my power steering box disconnected, is this true? As with every upgrade part that i install on the front, weight is a concern.

The factory non power setup is a bear to turn.  Possibly easier than a power box with the hose looped, but it has 7 turns lock to lock if I remember.
The only weight you will save is the same if you just removed the pump and brackets though.

Would this be a straight forward swap? Or would i need to order more parts than just a manual steering box?

the manual just bolts in the same spot as the power box.
