85 crew cab build/4x4 conversion
« on: December 15, 2014, 03:15:37 pm »
Hey guys its been awhile
About 6months well I decided to start a new tread hopefully with
Less dumb questions and more progress
I had to take a step back and take some time and really decide on what I wanna do with this
So many ppl start a project like this than abort mission
I didnt want to do that but I have decided what I am gonna do
So here is a run down
I have a 85 crew cab 4x2 454 th400
I decided I didnt want the big block just wasnt impressed with the
Power or millage compared to my 5.7 vortec in my 99 suburban
So I sold the 454 th400 set up
And I used those funds for wheels and tires and carb and intake
I am a little undecided on keeping it fuel injected but I did pick up all the stuff needed for a carb conversion I am leaning on doing that just to keep it simple
I decided to use my 99 burban as a donor for this project
So I have all the stuff if I go injected
But I will use the motor and 4l80e out of it for shure with a stand alone computer
Truck will have a 4" lift with 33s I like that combo on thease trucks
It looks just right
I will be doing a short box on it but un shure when
I will post a few pics later tonight
feel free to give your advice good and bad I am very
open to all of it

I was thinking np205
But if I can  find a direct bolt on case with a pass side drop
that would  be nice
as far as axel
14bolt rear
 10 bolt front

A 85 or newer NP-208 should be a direct bolt on
In place of the NP-241 that was there

The 4L will have either a 28 spline output or a 32 spline

The 208 also will have one or the other
Behind a TH -350 will be 28 and a 400 and 4 speeds will be 32

This is assuming your burb is 4wd ?

If its 2wd you're gonna need a trans from a 4wd

A NP-241 was passenger drop in the 88-91 burbs blazers and crew cabs
And should be a direct bolt on

the 4l80e is a 32 spline the 4l60 (700r4) is 27. if you go with the 205 you need a 85+ for the long shaft and round pattern. i have one now under my 91 crew, if i could and had time i will be making the 4l80e and 205 adapters

Does it need an adapter?
I thought it bolted right on ?

The 205 round pattern 32 spline are golden unicorns

Impossible to find and $600 or so if you do find one

A 208 works and they are much easier to find and about $250

Don't forget that if your opting for the burb transfer case the 10 bolt wont work you need a Ford straight axle. (pumpkin on left side)

theres a handful of adapters for the 4l80e/205 that you can use you can use some from the th400. but theres a couple different ones from the th400 style and you might need an adapter to push the case away. then theres an adapter you can use the short 205, but most times you have to buy and adapter.

if i can remember right my adapter is about 3½" long. if you do use the th400 adapters you have to have it machined out to fit the slightly bigger 4l80e but the bolt patterns are the same. i did find a round 205 off a late 80s southern states truck. it was sitting in a junkyard in the transmission building on a shelf in the back. no one knew it was there except for one guy who was there when they took it off. but it didnt have an adapter think i paid only 300 for it. i couldnt let it go

A NV-241 tcase from a 88-91 burb or blazer should work

I took some pics but havent figured out how too
Resize the so I can post them maybe the wife will help me
I dont know much about that kinda stuff
I am haveing second thoughts about useing the 4l80e
I got to thinking and kinda miss a manual
And the wife has driven a few in the past
So she gave me permission to make it a stick
as long as I dont get back I to truck pulling
We did that for 7 yrs with a mod 4x4 and had alot of money
Into it something we both dont miss
So I might sell the 4l80e and apply the funds towards a sm465 np205 set up I will keep the 3.73 gears with 33's
The almost stock carb converted small block
Should be ok for now
I do have access to a few differnt
Part trucks for cheap for the conversion

now about the stick i would of loved to make my crew a stick but its a good thing i didnt. didnt think about it the time while i was looking but i dont like to put the kids by doors because of side impacts. so our 3 year old is in the back center and our 2 month old is in the front center. if we all go somewhere its in the truck most of the time now. but if you go stick think about the nv4500. but its the same deal as the 4l80e so you still need the t case and adapter. with the nv4500 you still get OD
