87 V20 body side moulding
« on: January 08, 2015, 03:15:29 pm »
How is held on?  Under the taillights were holes for a fastener of some sort, but they were gone, and the moulding was held on by 3/m tape, though the moulding was gone leaving just tape residue.  Are there factory holes on the side of bed/door/fender mouldings?   I found many threads about how to remove and remove the residue, but not the answer to this.  Thanks in advance!

The corners under the taillights were metal and used a molding clip to mount through the hole.  The remainder of the body side molding was vinyl/plastic attached with double sided tape.

The metal oem corner pieces are different from the Scottsdale to Silverado. Also the side moulding is different between the trim levels also.

But do they attach differently?

They are off!  The 3/m eraser wheel did a pretty good job, but there is still a "film" left behind, best description would be that it looks like clear packing tape.  I tried the 3/m adhesive remover, and it didn't do much at all...

I'll attack again this weekend with my heat gun (on low) and some plastic razor blades, but if anyone has a better suggestion, I'm all ears!

I've heard the suggestion of urethane reducer, but it might be to gnarly on old paint... :o

I used an eraser on mine.  As long as it is glue it should come off, it may just be tough. I would be VERY careful with a razor blade though.  Pics of mine are in my Suburban post.

Plastic razor blades....I'd be too scared to use real blades.   The eraser wheel worked magic on most of it, but there is still a film that it's having a hard time with, almost like a clear paint.  I don't think it's the clear-coat, but it very well could be.  If it is, I have a plan to use a gray (fine) 3/M Scotch-Brite pad to scuff the "edge" off, so that I can put a buffing wheel on it.
