Drivetrain problems
« on: December 17, 2004, 02:24:00 pm »
Hello I'm new to this site. I'm David with a 83 chevy 4x4 fleet side. Had a problem with my drivetrain the other night on the interstate, been checking out the website and thought someone should know what happened or it has happened to them before. OK I was on the interstate during rush hour when my truck acted like I put it in neutral I had nothing. of course I was in the high speed lane, but had nothing in any gear. I thought the rearend went out. So the next day was going to drive it home in 4wheel, stated it up put it in gear (2wheel) and it seems like nothing is wrong with it, run great. Has anybody had this happen. (Seems weird I know, but it happened)
Thanks!

I had an 86 K20 standard shift, in 88 only had 18,000 miles on it, that did the same thing to me several times. When I called the local Chevy dealer they told me they would still warranty it. turns out the outer bearing on the input shaft of the transfer case went out. They said they had seen this prob. several times. Might not be whats wrong with yours but its an idea.  P.S. welcome to the board.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

Thanks for the replies, also forgot to let you know that its an automatic w/overdrive I think a tr700 trans. The fluids in the trany was fine, red didn't smell burnt. But this sounded like a retaining clip came loose in the rear brakes and was rubbing the drum, just put brakes on the week before. Thats why I thought the rearend went out, then somebody else mentioned the transfer case may be bad. A CVS van pushed me off the interstate to risky to try to put it in 4 wheel during rush hour. After he pushed me I put it back in gear and it went right in like nothing was wrong. But I had put it in 4 wheel to get it home and it seemed to run fine so I put it back to 2 wheel and drove it about 30 miles with no problem. Checking the differential fluids today, pulling the diff covers and checking gears and starting with that. Like to know what happened. This truck still has the window sticker in the glove box it mentions that it has G80 locking differentials, are those gears or clutches guess I'll find out. Thanks again for the replies and hope to talk again.
