Fuel Tanks

Hey guys,  I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a difference in size between the fuel tanks on a long box versus a short box truck.  I have a 78 1/2 ton, 2WD long box that I am cutting down to a short box and wanted to know if I could use the stock fuel tanks.  I was hoping to not have to go with an aftermarket, (fill through the bed floor), tank.  Any info would be appreciated.

Long bed trucks are 20 gallon tanks, short bed trucks are 16 gallon tanks.

ltz is pretty right as a standard. but in some rare cases there can be a 16 gal in a long wheel base as a auxiliary tank and the main tank would be 20 gal. but all standard wheel bases got the 16 gal

Thanks all for the info.  Just didn't look like a lot of room under there between the front of the rear spring mount and the tank once I took the section out of the frame. 

Iv'e got acess to a short bed 4WD truck that I purchased the box off off.  If they are 16 gallon tanks maybe I can get those to use.  No differences between short box 2WD tanks and short box 4WD tanks are there?

Nope.  No difference.  But there is a difference by year.  Later tanks of both sizes had a larger diameter filler neck opening.

Well, no luck on the gas tanks from the donor truck.  Although its a shortbox, its a camper special which I guess meant it came with 20 gallon tanks, (same as mine).  Was thinking of going to a 78 blazer fuel tank, but not sure what "new" issues that will cause for me.  Any input from anyone who has done it??  Thanks in advance..

camper special was a long wheel base or standard?

This particular truck is a short wheel base 4X4.  The cab says camper special on it, but it might be a different cab.  The tanks are definately 20 gallon tanks though.

so a swb can fit 20 gal tanks. so i guess as a norm 16 gal for swb and 20 for a long, but in some situations either size tank can be under any size bed

Was the truck modified to fit those 20 gallon tanks? Its been awhile, but a few years ago I measured my 83 c10 swb to see if 20 gallon tanks could fit, and I'm 91.82% certain the tank would have collided with the front hanger for the rear springs...

As far as the blazer tank goes, the 25 gallon flavor is not a terribly difficult swap to undertake, as I understand it.

The 20gal tanks won't fit under one as there isn't enough room.  Are you sure they are 20gal tanks?
