1984 C10 Transmission into 1987 Silverado V10 4x4?
« on: April 01, 2015, 09:15:21 pm »
The 700r4 transmission in my 1987 Silverado 4x4 V10 is dead in the water.

I found a local guy selling the 700r4 out of his 1984 C10 4x4.  Says he had it rebuilt about 8 years ago and there's only 10,000 miles on it  since putting it back into the truck.

Says it and the transfercase worked fine before removal.  Asking $400.00

My question is, will this or should this be a pretty straight forward swap into my Silverado?

I think I want to sell the Silverado so I don't want to  put a ton of money into it, just get it back on the road.

Found a 1946 Dodge Power Wagon that I want to buy.

Anyone with any insights or experience?

:)

Here's the best shots I could get of the transmission currently in the Silverado.

That PN 8663548 is for a 700R4, so you should be good for the swap.

problem with a 700r4 they are known to be junk and can be easily burnt up or just lose 3rd and 4th, buying a used one already pulled you dont know what your getting and his asking price is not much above what i would consider "core" price. i would go to a junkyard at least you get some warranty with them four only a couple hundred more

The 700R4, as mentioned by many a million times before are pretty weak in their early years. 1984 being right in the middle of that period. The later models are much better and more reliable, those models began about 1987.
So if you get another 700, get one that's the same year as your truck or up to 1990 or 91 I believe, anything before that isn't worth it. Or have yours rebuilt, your in the good year range of the 700's when GM fixed the parts that made them crap in the prior years.

I'm assuming the wire going to this is for the locking torque converter.  I guess if yours originally had a 700R4 in it, it would have a locking converter, also..

So any 700r4 4x4 Chevy trans all the way up to 1990 or 1991 would be a safe bet to just bolt in and go?

Since I'm going to sell the truck, I'm hoping to not put a ton of money into it.  If I were going to keep it I would do a major overhaul which would include a 454/Turbo 400/Divorced NP205, of which I have all of these things.

I'm kind of itching to get the 1946 Dodge Power Wagon and let someone else enjoy the Silverado.  I love the Silverado but I really like the Dodge Power Wagon.

I'm about 90% sure any 700R4  from 1987 to 1990 or 91 should bolt right in, as long as it's out of a 4x4. Best thing to do is see if you can find something that is as close to the same as yours, year, model, 4x4 and engine size.

Mcintyrederek, 700R4, have usually 3 or 4 wires going to them. The Turbo 350 with a lock up converter had only 1 wire.

just wondering where you guys are getting 1991 from? is there a difference in the 92 and some 93s? in 93 is when they came out with the 4l60e.

another note is mike call around see who can rebuild the trans for cheap. might be $6-800 i know you said you dont want to put too much money into it but you could ask maybe a little more since its a fresh rebuild and you might be waisting money on buying a bad trans

Irish, I wasn't sure what year they started using the 4l60, I knew it was early 90 something, I said 91 to be safe. As far as I know they are the same.

Also, you have a point with your idea in the second paragraph.

dont get the 4l60 and 4l60e confused. the 4l60 is pretty much the 700r4 but with upgraded parts the 4l60e is electronically shifted so you have a lack of the tv cable. i want to say in 88 they changed the name from 700r4 to 4l60 some say due to the bad rap the 700 got others say gm changed all their transmissions nomenclature

Have you ever met our transmission tech? That was basically the exact same way he explained it to me. Little different wording and a bucket full of F-bombs but basically the same LOL.

So to be correct I should stop saying I have a 700R4 and instead say I have a 4L60.

to be correct "yes" but then you might have someone get the 4l60e and 4l60 confused. when we got a rebuild kit from summit one of the packages said 4l60(87-93)  the other one said 700r4 (85-89) its been a couple years so dont quote me on the years and they overlapped like that but they didnt cover all 700r4s. i think the trans was for 88-98 style chevy.

so either way there will be confusion. kind of like someone auguring that all 350s are the same. they may be the same on the outside with a couple changes but the insides is where it matters (dont judge a book by its cover)
