85k10 engine swap 5.0 ->5.7 vortec carbed
« on: April 13, 2015, 07:19:02 pm »
OK guys I have both motors almost ready to pull and have a vortec carb intake in the mail coming next week, couple of questions, what is a easy way to remove the motor mount bolt I have the nut off the bolt and tapped it as much as I can with a hammer I have no air tools and it us tight spaces where it is so how is the best way to get it out?

Will the 5.0 distributer fit in the 5.7 vortec?

Do I need to remove the transmission to take out the motor? I have the transmission bolts removed and torque converter bolts removed .

And this will be a hunting truck/ beach truck so my next question is what cfm carb should I go with I was thinking a eddlebrock or Rochester carb so brand input would be nice to of what people prefer I have a 600 cfm holly on the 305 but it needs rebuilding

For the transmission removal question I'm basically asking if it needs to be pushed back off dowl pins or when I hook engine lift up would it come free from transmission

You can pull the motor without removing the tranny.   Just have to be careful.   I use a rachet strap to hold the tranny up.   The 305 distributor will work on the 350 that are the same.  To remove the engine mount bolt I've used a screw drive to pry on the head while using a rachet to turn the bolt.  It's slow and annoying but works.  Summit racing has a cfm calculator.  With a mostly stock 350 with the vortex carb combo and roller cam the 600cfm carb was plenty.  If you go bigger you may get more hp at high rpm but will lose throttle response.  Oh and push the torque converter back into the tranny away from the flywheel.

Ok yea the 305 had a eddlebrock 750 on it when I got it but it malfunctioned and when I went to rebuild it I bent one of the needles that sets into the float and when I put the 600 on it I didn't feel any hp loss but didn't know if the 350 needed more. Summit has a rebuilt 650 Cfm for about 280$ so I might go with that, thanks for the advice Ill try ratchet strap and screw driver once rain stops tomorrow

A 600cfm carb is perfect for a mild 350.
On the motor mount bolt, once you pushed it back as did, place an open end 1/2" wrench under the head of the bolt. Now you can pull on the bolt as you spin it off with a ratchet.
