1985 C30 Crew Cab Dually
« on: May 25, 2015, 03:48:06 pm »
I have had this truck for several months and still just not comfortable with the 6.2 Diesel.... it runs great, pulls ok and gets killer fuel mileage...... however.....I cannot seem to adjust to the diesel engine. I have a 1987 GMC C7000 with a 6.6 BBC, I understand it is a low RPM high torque engine. How would this engine do in the C30? Would it tow a 12000 pound camper and a 3000 pound trailer? She is already doing a decent job with the camper....... Just asking.....  :o

Pulling the engine next week....... never got any replies so I am guessing no one knows...... also going to try to use the big 5 speed in the dually ........ wish me luck..... the 366 only has about 30,000 miles on it and the 5 speed has less on its rebuild....

Thanks, Fatman

Sorry you haven't seen any replies yet, sometimes it takes awhile because there are so many posts and so many members. I'm not real sure I understand you right.

You have an 85 C30 with the 6.2D. There is nothing wrong with it but it just doesn't sit well with you. So you plan on swapping it with the BBC out of your 87 C7000. Do I have this correct?

Also, the BBC in your 87 you noted as being a 6.6, a 6.6L V8 is a small block 400. The only thing close to that in a big block is a big block 396. So I'm guessing that your 87 has the 396 BBC. Does that sound right? I'm pretty familiar with the engine families but wanted to clear that up for anyone else that might pop their head in the door here.

Only thing I can say for now if you really are gonna pull the diesel out is be careful, takent your time, use some painters tape and a sharpie and label everything. Anything that goes with the diesel engine should be set aside with the engine itself when you take it out. Fuel tank sending units, fuel filter housings, engine mounts, anything that is diesel specific. There are ALOT of people out there that would love a good, strong and healthy 6.2D and all the pieces that go with it. I know I would.

If the diesel runs great, pulls ok and gets good mileage what else is there to adjust to?

The 366 BBC was used in a lot of medium duty trucks and buses.

Are you sure the C-7000 engine isn't a 366 cid?
