gas tank and sending units
« on: May 30, 2015, 04:59:07 pm »
Will the '85 gas sending units fit a '87 tank. I need new tanks and would like to put the '87 tanks in my '85. This is just in case I should ever install a fuel injection and would need the baffle in the '87 tank.

Yes, it should work. I've done 86' sending units in 87' tanks before.

from what i can see the tanks are broken down to these years 73-81, 82-86 and 87. the lock ring stay the same trough out the years. the 87 does have the baffle

there might be a problem with the sending unit touching the baffle

The baffel is around 2 inches off the bottom. I will take a pic of the measuring tape inside the tank I have off right now. That way too can compare the depth of the 85 u it to the 87 tank to see if they will swap.
You may just consider getting the 87 sending unit and just extending the pickup tube. That way whenever you go EFI all you gotta do is pop in a pump and bam.

Thanks guys, I ordered 85 tanks from Advance Auto they only had 1 '87 tank in stock. Could not tell me when a second tank would be available. Used a 20%off coupon made tanks $87.00 each.

you ordered the 85 tank? you will be ok with the efi in that tank just dont run the tank low below 1/4 when you do make the swap

This is a fact. After running this tank dry by ideling the teu k in the driveway I still had 2gallons+ in the tank when I took it down. The baffels sit high off the tank and also likely prevent too much junk from clogging the pump filter.
