Time for new cluster...
« on: June 04, 2015, 10:17:11 pm »
So, while trying to get all the lights working in my cluster by using known good bulbs my printed circuit decided to go up in smoke...literally. Luckily it didn't damage anything else, however since my gauges have not been working very well from the start I think I'll replace all of them. The voltage and oil pressure gauges are the only ones that work properly. Speedo is way off and just drops the south after maybe 50mph on the gauge which is roughly 35 actual, bounces all over under that speed, stays at 10 or 20 at a stop, fuel gauge sweeps back and forth, temp never worked, have after market hooked up that works great. I only got the left side lights working before the right side went up in smoke. So, seeing as how I need to replace gauges and the printed circuit, it seems it would be roughly the same cost to buy VDO gauges and mount them in the cluster than to replace stock gauges and circuit. Wiring does not scare me, as I have had to rewire 2 vehicles of my own previously, however, concerting a cable speedo into an electrical speedo is new to me, as is mechanical gauges to electrical, I assume the wiring for those would have to made.

My question is this: What do I need, other than the gauges, to make this work? Which fuel gauge ohms range is correct?

I know Dakota digital makes a conversion for the digital side of the speedo I'm currently using it since I switched mine to all digital as for the gas tank do you have one or two gas tanks I'll let you know what my manual says about it since they all could be different

I have a single tank on the passenger side. I found Stewart Warner gauges for considerably cheaper so I may use them instead of VDO, I found several speedo senders, however the descriptions are all vague and a little confusing.

I think any of those will work, but I'm not entirely sure.

I decided to go with VDO after all...got the fuel gauge and installed it in the metal piece...used a round tin cutter designed to cut holes in tin, which worked great, but was still too small. Since the cutter was too small I used a cheap imitation dremel to finish which sucked, but it worked. Now to clearance the plastic housing and wiring. Which brings me to the next question. Where can I find a comprehensible list or illustration for the gauge cluster wiring. I have a new 15 pin connector I just need to know what wire goes where. This week I'll order a speedometer, I already got the electric speedometer sender, so that should be easy...oh do I need to get new speedo gears for the trans? It was off before, it has a th350 3.42s and 29" tall tires.
