so last Friday I picked up another windshield and the j/y and went to install it again. this time I had success. once I had the bottom set I pulled the sting up the sides and just made sure the glass was either slightly in the rubber or just by it as it got closer to the top. pulled the cord across the top and the glass popped in.
here's the cord I used...

Thanks for posting this and congrats on a job well done. That looks like pretty heavy duty rope too.

the rope is like 5/50 cord or paracord. IIRC I picked it up at Wally World. its about a 1/4" in diameter.
