Stereo Questions
« on: July 02, 2015, 09:37:36 am »
Hi I have recently purchased a 84 shortbed. I am trying to plan out a stereo system. My goal is to have a well-balanced stereo system. I currently have a 300.4 JL audio amp, a Memphis 16 CX-25 crossover, 2 12" kicker subs with 800.2 kicker amp, and a kenwoood head unit. I am thinking of going with the JL audio C2 6.5" component speakers and C2 6x9's. I would like to place the 6.5" in the kick panels and 6x9's where the original 4x10's went. Would this be enough or should I also install some 3.5" in the dash, which I do have some cheaper kickers? Would it be a good idea to place the tweeters in the A-pillars or stay closer to the 6.5's?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks,

Chris

on the 6x9's in the rear, i did them in my 87.  you can reuse the old speaker brackets in the cab corners, but with the bigger magnet, you'll have to swap them left to right to fit it in there, if it isn't too big.

do you have a bench seat?  if so it's gonna soak up most of the sound the rears make because it points more behind the seat than around the side into your ribs.  not as bad with buckets.   i have buckets in mine, and the speaker i put behind them are facing straight up and it sounds pretty good, but again that wont work as well with a bench, though it may work better than them being aimed like stock.

the dash speakers will give you better sound staging.

In mine i (it's a 78 with center mounted speaker in dash)  i have two 3.5s in a plate i made to mount them both in the center hole.  they run direct off the stereos built in amp with inline bass blockers.  I have a sony slimline 500w amp hidden under my console for the other speakers.  i have 6x9s in the door  ( i know you dont wanna do that)  that run off the amp, and are controlled by the head units subwoofer control since they provide all the bass, and the 6.5's behind the seats are off the amp in the rear setting.  i have no sub.  i mounted my 6x9s in the door for bass, as i dont have a sub and can't fit one in behind my seats as i'm 6'3" and those buckets are thick.  since you have a good set of subs, (sorry if im ramblin but im thinking on the fly yeah thats whats burning)  the setup your talking about should work well.

id put some 6.5s in a box behind the seat in the corners facing straight up do the ones in the kick panel, and add the dash speakers too.  also if you get that many mids n tweets going you may want to get two ways and not three ways.  might be too blaring.   maybe two ways for the front and three ways for the rear.  the dash speakers will add a lot to the staging, way more than the kick panels, but they are too small to use to cover the entire front without the kick panels.

point the back speakers straight up, and do use dask speakers.  those four provide most of the staging, the kick panels only reinforce the dash speakers.  with only kick panels, the sound changes a lot when you have a passenger, and is off balance when you are alone just because its by your feet shrouded by your leg.

Mine is an 81 with the OEM AM/FM radio and single center speaker.

Can the stock radio support two additional dash-corner speakers?

To create an optimal sound stage, you need to be ready to do some creative work on your interior, especially staying within the equipment restrictions you presented. Without going into the doors with ANYTHING, I would run 6.5" component sets for the front, locate the tweets in A pillar pods, aimed at the opposing seat (ie, passenger tweeter aimed at the driver seat, driver side tweet at the passenger seat), HPF set 20% higher than the lowest resonant frequency for the tweeter alone. Run the midrange/midbass 6.5s in the kick panels, LPF around 10% lower than the highest frequency for the midrange, hpf around 150hz, run a quality 6x9 in the cab corners with a LPF at 7khz, HPF at about 100hz. On your subs, I don't know the specs for their frequency response, but I would set one up with a LPF around 100hz, hpf 18hz, and one around LPF 200 hz, hpf 80 hz, assuming they respond at those ends of the range. This system would be fairly well balanced, but, if you like a lot of bass or listen to a lot of hip hop/rap, you will find it lacking in midbass intensity. This can be made up with additional drivers that respond from 100hz-1000hz, and filter them accordingly, then adjust gains for each range to suit your tastes.

If you have the one I think you have, it can support 4 total.
Mine came with the AC Delco AM/FM, 2 3.5" speakers in the dash, and 2 4x10's behind the seat.
