I converted my AC to a Sanden compressor. Still doesn't work. More parts on the way. SMH

However, I did need to clearance the air cleaner to make it work.

My nephew did the welding. I did the bad paint job.

I feel like the air cleaner needs a sticker.

The Suburban failed smog yesterday. No, it wasn't because of the giant holes in the exhaust. It wasn't because of the 250 year old cat, which is still keeping HCs admirably low for its age.

It was the Dorman gas tank. The metal is so thin, it split open at the top. I lost the first 1/8 of every fill-up for a long time, until I dropped it and patched it. Now it's done it again. Not only that, the poor baffling caused a hesitation problem whenever I got below a 1/2 tank.

Anyway, I have a new Sherman tank coming (no pun intended). I'll let you know how it is.

It's a shame too.  Thirty-five or so years ago they marketed top-notch USA-made products for competitive prices.  Then they sold their souls for extra profit.  Now they sell honey-pot seconds.

It's painful to watch everything good get wrecked.

I have the same problem with a 28 yo car. The cat doesn't get hot enough... :-[

How close to the max allowance did it read?

I've had smog pro's tell me to drive it hard for 30 minutes, sometimes in a lower gear uphill, trying to get the temp up.

I've never used it, but an engineer said adding rubbing alcohol to your gas raises the temp of the cat. Urban legend?

My cat is fine, oddly. Just a little over the Average.

There's a guy on YT who tried the acetone trick on his cat and said it works. Did 2 whole videos on it. I suppose you can try that if you have nothing else to lose. Cats aren't that expensive, unless you live in California. Except they just got that universal Magnaflow approved here, which isn't all that much either.

Sadly (actually not too sadly) I live in Cali, the land of fruits and nuts.

It's a 96 Benz S class, they see me coming from ten miles away... :(

I'll check out the video, trying to sell it but gross polluter is not working at the moment.

Thanks for the follow up! 8)

Oh! You have a German car!! ROFL!! Yeah, that cat is going to break you. I had a 95 540i for a few years, and it was both amazing and exasperating. I learned a lot from it. Does yours have a big engine, or a little one?

It's a 320, smallest motor they made for that series. I may covertly block half of my radiator...worked with a '94 S500.

I dropped the tank Saturday and found that my patch had completely failed.

Then I did some wire wheeling and priming.
