86 GMC C2500
« on: July 21, 2015, 04:59:46 pm »
Hi all, I am working on an 86 GMC 3/4 ton lwb with a 350ci, th350, and 14b rear in it. It's all original from what I can tell.  It worked it's life on a sugarcane field as a farm truck here in Louisiana. I will use this thread as a build thread. My goal is to clean it up to daily driver condition.

A couple of questions have come up as I've been working on it the past few weeks I was hoping to get some info on. I've tried searching online with no luck.

The RPO codes in the glove box don't indicate anything about the brakes. I have vacuum assist, no hydro boost.

The brake master cylinder that was on it had the plastic cap/reservoir , indicating JB6 brakes (11" rear drums) so that's what I replaced it with. However afterwards I measured the drums and looked at the front calipers and I have the HD brakes ( 13" drums and larger calipers) indicating JB7 brakes which is a 1/4" larger bore metal cap/reservoir master cylinder. The brakes are working fine with the JB6 MC and I'm wondering if I should still go ahead and change it to the larger bore, JB7 Mc?

Thanks

If your just using it for transport, occasional hauling you should be fine with the smaller master. If you plan on using it every day for hauling heavy cargo, & or a trailer. You might want the bigger one, but even then its a toss up.

im with blaz, people swap rears all the time and the difference in the jb6 and jb7 is only 1200lbs i wouldnt worry about it unless you want to get your truck recertified in its gvwr. but then thats just what i would do

Made a lot of progress on it. New Front end, interior insulation and vinyl floor. New brakes,  vacuum lines, carb, plugs, wires, and all the lighting housings replaced. Spent the last few weeks prepping for paint as best I could. It really needs to be sandblasted to get an even surface to start with.

Holy crap that's not the same truck! That looks great! It's like a lightly faded red on a truck with original paint. It looks like you got a nice even coat all the way around. Very nice job! I have just begun experimenting with plasti-dip and I really like it. I wouldn't be ashamed to drive that at all.

Thanks, it was first time doing a whole vehicle using the DYC sprayer. After the first panel I had the technique down to get a smooth and even finish. Plus I scored 4 of the gallons for $75 on an Amazon price mistake a year ago. :)

I'm not sure man. But if you want my honest, I mean really honest opinion. I wouldn't sell it. You put so much work into it, it looks 1000 times better then the terd you posted originally, you really did a solid and great job cleaning it up and making a good truck again. Ide keep it an enjoy it. And then with any vehicle, just fix a problem when it happens.

So there, that's my opinion, keep it. I think it looks very nice.

I would like to. I plan on fixing the A/C, put new exhaust on it, and install all the new steering parts I have.  That way I could really daily drive it. The problem is I'm running out of space, I have 3 other trucks. Wife's not too happy. ;)

I've had offers of $1800 but turned it down.

Well depending on what your other trucks are, i.e. if they aren't Chevy or GMC I'de say sell one or 2 of those and keep this one.

The dip job looks great.
I was wondering who would be the first one here to dip a truck.
Any details/tips on doing it?
