Hagerty Insurance?
« on: July 22, 2015, 11:10:18 am »
Hey folks...

I did a search on insurance and found a few old posts but nothing recent.

What kind of insurance do you carry on your "classic" trucks?  I have had State Farm for years and had my '76 GMC insured (full coverage) with them too.  However, after putting a new engine and transmission (couple of years ago), and more recently redoing the interior, I started thinking that maybe I needed something better.  If I had a total loss (theft or wreck), I figured S.F. would give me some terribly low amount for it.  I checked with my agent, and he recommended that I provide receipts for all of the work I had done and submit them for review. Long story short, this was a waste of time - S.F. basically said that they would keep the receipts on file and take them "under consideration" should a total loss be incurred.  To me, that just gives them an "out" and they would never pay me anything over what "book" is on the truck.

Anyway, I did some checking for classic/collector car insurance, and it seemed that was the way to go.  I compared Hagerty and Grundy mainly, but Grundy was out for me because they require at least 3 vehicles before they will insure you - at least that's what it showed on their online quote page.

I did a quote through Hagerty's website, which apparently is now partnered with Progressive, and was pleased with the cost - $214/year for an Agreed Value of $12,000 (about what I have tied up in the truck) vs. almost $300/year with State Farm.  Yesterday, I decided to go ahead with the Application Process, and see what happened.  Within a few hours I had a call from a VERY nice lady with Hagerty who had a few questions about how I use my truck.  I told her, honestly, that I drive it regularly, but it is not my primary vehicle.  I also occasionally use it to haul a little lumber (8ft. bed is useful for that), maybe pull a utility trailer, etc.  They had no problem with it at all, and didn't even question the amount I requested for an Agreed Value. They even told me that they do not care about mileage at all - never check odometer readings. They asked for a few pics of the truck, which I submitted via email shortly after our first conversation.  Within 20 minutes I had another call back, approved for the coverage requested.  A single payment over the phone and I'm now insured with Hagerty.

The process was so simple and painless, and it appears that I have better coverage for less money.

Now that the deal is done, I was just wondering what you guys have, and if you've ever had any trouble with Hagerty.

i have state farm for my 3 or 4 vehicles. 1 full coverage and 2 liability, geico screwed me years ago and my wifes family has been with s.f. for many years thinking 25. they love one lady who works there and they havnt been screwed. so after my geico incident and them saying i selected "special option K" which in order to get me to join them they gave me a $10,000 medical deductible. which wasnt completely their fault i should of been looking at my paper work, but i never signed off on this special option k. i switched to s.f., now the lady we all delt with has since left s.f. and we might be looking into other insurance companys also. so i want to chime in to get others opinions. btw with 3 vehicles im paying 160/month for me and the wife and its not cause of "poor driving records" but more of state limits

Thanks Irish.  My mom and dad have had S.F. for 40+ years.  They are the only insurance company I have ever used (25+ years) for home/auto, until now.  When my previous agent left S.F. a few years ago, all of my policies were moved to the agent I have now.  I'm not crazy about him, as he doesn't seem very interested in follow up.  I have had a couple of issues with S.F. over the years, but not enough that made me want to leave and lose all of the discounts I have accrued on my policies, but I am thinking of switching agents.

I was a little disappointed that S.F. didn't offer the kind of policy I wanted on my '76 truck, but I guess it's pretty typical of the larger insurance companies not to offer those kinds of policies.  I'm very happy with what the Hagerty insurance LOOKS like...I just hope I never have to use it and find out if it's as good as it looks. :)

I could be wrong here, but from what I have heard about Hagerty is they are very good, but you have to have another form of daily transportation, the one your insuring as a classic can't be a daily driver and there are miles per year restrictions. I wanted to use them too, but that won't work cuz I drive my truck everyday. It's pretty much my only vehicle.

I currently use USAA.

Yes, this part is true based on my conversation with the underwriter.  I have a 2010 Silverado and my wife has a 2014 Grand Cherokee, so we were covered on this part.

...and there are miles per year restrictions.

I wasn't asked for mileage information, and was told explicitly that they do not check odometer readings. So, no mileage restrictions. :)

I had full coverage with S.F. that was costing me $147 every six months.  The problem was with what I thought they would probably try to offer me if I had a total loss.  With $12,000+ tied up in the truck over the past few years, I didn't want to risk getting offered $1500 for some "old truck".

I am rolling the dice, I have coverage with State Farm on my yellow truck in my avatar.  $161 every 6 months and when it is in storage for fire and theft it is $12 per 6 months.  My agent assured me it would be covered for what I have in it with all the pictures and receipts.  I too hope to never need to use it.

I guess you could put another car on a policy with Hagerty and continue to drive your classic everyday.

Some insurance companies do take into consideration modifications you have made to your vehicle and will reimburse if you have receipts. Of course, if you think the car is worth 12x Blue Book because it's "classic," that probably won't fly, but verifiable improvements do count with some insurers.

I've always had really good luck with State Farm until recently. They can't seem to get me my monthly statement for some reason. I get everything else, insurance cards, policy notices, cancellation notices when I don't pay (because they won't send my monthly statement). I call, complain. They call me and complain. I complain back. Whatever.

Thanks for all of the feedback, guys...

Everything I've read here and on other websites says Hagerty is good to work with, and I certainly was pleased with them when signing up.  I guess in the end it's cheaper per year, has the "agreed value" for a total loss, and has $0 deductible...so it can't be all bad.

Hopefully I'll never have to use it anyway. :)

All the classic car ins co's require a locked garage and another vehicle to drive and while they don't limit miles.   They do limit use in the fine print
And they limit drivers age
Usually requiring 25 or over

We have our classics ,  74 bronco and a 76 K-10 insured as normal cars with full coverage

I'm sure we will get screwed if we ever have a loss.  But I don't have a closed garage and we have a teen driver and I want high medical and property limits
Plus no classic ins co will cover a 4 WD vehicle
It's in the fine print somewhere that they will not pay if an accident happens on an unpaved road and we do take em off road occasionally

Most companies will quote you on the state minimum coverage
Which in some states is as low as $5K

$5K is a minor fender bender
An accident can easily top $75-100K if you hit a couple of fancy cars or if someone gets injured
